Develop and deliver cutting-edge container crane automation technology

AMLab is a Western Australian technology company specialising in LiDAR and camera machine vision, industrial automation control systems and advanced software solutions for container terminals around the world.

We are looking for an Automation Software Engineer with approximately 1-3 years of professional software experience to join our growing development team.

This role would suit someone with strong Python fundamentals who wants to work on complex, practical engineering problems and build software that interacts with machines in the real world.

About the role

You will develop and implement software for camera vision, LiDAR processing, automation logic and crane-control applications used in live container-terminal operations. You will work among products utilising OCR (optical character recognition), LiDAR-based fusion and perception, to create applications for collision-prevention systems, control-assistance functions and operator interaction.

Key responsibilities

- Develop and maintain Python software for machine vision and industrial-automation systems.

- Working alongside experienced engineers, to contribute to product development across the full lifecycle: design, development, testing, deployment, commissioning and support.

- Working in software teams, understanding and working with code to improve software reliability and scalability.

- Contribute to automation logic and software that interfaces with crane-control systems and industrial equipment.

- Troubleshoot and debug software and system-integration issues.

- Participate in software testing, validation, code review and documentation.

- Assist with the deployment and commissioning of systems at customer sites.

- Analyse operational data and contribute to product improvements.

- Support existing products and help resolve customer or site issues.

- Take increasing ownership of software components and technical deliverables as your experience develops.

- You will have opportunities to travel internationally, commission systems on some of the world’s largest container-handling machines and see your software operating in the field.

About you

You are a practical software engineer who enjoys understanding how things work and applying software to physical systems.

You are curious, proactive and comfortable asking questions, but you are also willing to investigate problems independently and have a proactive work ethic to take responsibility for completing your work to a high degree of excellence.

You will ideally have:

- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, Robotics, Automation, or a related discipline.

- 1-3 years of skilled software-development experience.

- Confident Python programming skills including experience troubleshooting and debugging.

- An understanding of software-development principles, version control and testing in a team environment.

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

- A detail-oriented nature which lends itself to producing reliable software

- A desire to work in a fast-moving technical environment.

- Self-motivation and willingness to learn from experienced engineers and progressively take on greater responsibility.

- Good written and verbal communication skills.

- The right to work in Australia,

the willingness and ability to travel internationally and work at heights when required.

A combination of any of the following would be highly regarded:

- LiDAR, sensor-fusion, perception processing.

- Camera vision, OCR, object detection and tracking, image processing.

- Robotics, automation, controls or motion-control systems.

- Unity 3D, simulation or digital twins.

- PLC programming.

- Interfacing work within industrial systems or heavy machinery.

- Networking, communications protocols or sensor integration.

- Deployment or commissioning of software into production.

We also value personal, university and side projects involving robotics, automation, vision systems, controls, simulation or complex software.

Why join AMLab?

- AMLab provides an environment where speed-to-deployment is very short, resulting in a high-intensity work environment amongst a team of bright engineers with great work ethic.

- Work on software that operates on major industrial machinery in real customer environments.

- Develop experience across Python, LiDAR, machine vision, automation and control systems.

- Learn from experienced engineers working on globally deployed products.

- Travel internationally and participate in system commissioning.

- Join a growing Australian technology company with customers around the world.

- Flexible working arrangements are supported where practical.

- Salary will be commensurate with experience.

How to apply

Please submit your CV and a covering letter through SEEK.

Tell us about a software, automation, robotics or engineering project you have worked on. This could be professional work, a university project or something you built independently.

We are interested in what you built, the problem you were trying to solve and the contribution you personally made.
