About the opportunity
The Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) Manager is a national leadership role responsible for designing, implementing, and continuously improving a robust safety management system across all operations.
Working within a chemical manufacturing environment for the building industry, this role is critical to ensuring compliance with all applicable WHS legislation, building a strong and proactive safety culture, and protecting the physical and psychological wellbeing of all employees.
The role carries responsibility for governance, risk management, training, incident investigation, claims management, and the development of practical safety tools that enable managers to fulfil their safety obligations with confidence.
Ensure full organisational compliance with the Work Health and Safety Act ****, associated regulations,



codes of practice, and relevant Australian Standards applicable to Mapei Australia
Monitor and interpret emerging WHS legislative changes, providing proactive advice and recommendations to leadership team and management
Develop, maintain, and continuously improve a robust WHS governance framework, including policies, procedures, standards, and safe operating procedures
Manage all regulatory reporting obligations, including notifiable incidents to relevant state/territory regulators
Ensure maintenance of WHS registers including hazard registers, risk registers, and legal compliance registers
Prepare and present governance and compliance reports to the Leadership Team and relevant committees
Influence and support managers to meet their legislative and organisational WHS responsibilities
Develop and implement waste management programs that ensure proper handling, storage, disposal, and recycling of hazardous and non-hazardous materials
Develop and test emergency response plans for various scenarios, such as fires, chemical spills, natural disasters, and medical emergencies.
Coordinate drills and exercises to ensure employees are well-prepared
Lead investigations into workplace incidents, accidents, near misses, and hazardous conditions using structured methodologies (e.g. ICAM or 5 Whys analysis)
Ensure investigations are thorough, timely, objective, and result in meaningful corrective actions with clear accountability and close-out timeframes
Oversee workers' compensation and injury management processes nationally, working closely with HR and external insurers to support workers in early and protected return-to-work
Maintain accurate incident records and claims data; identify trends and implement preventative measures




Manage relationships with external regulators, legal counsel, and insurers as required.
About the role
About you
Tertiary qualification in Work Health and Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related discipline
Minimum 5 years' experience in management WHS role within a complex or multi-disciplinary organisation
Proven experience in manufacturing, chemical, hazardous materials, or similarly regulated high-risk industries highly regarded
Sound working knowledge of the WHS Act ****, associated regulations, and state/territory harmonization legislation
Demonstrated experience leading safety culture change programs and measuring cultural maturity over time
Hands-on experience in incident investigation using structured methodologies (e.g., ICAM, Root Cause Analysis)
Practical experience in workers' compensation and injury management across multiple Australian jurisdictions
Experience partnering with HR on psychosocial hazard identification and management
Experience leading, mentoring, or managing WHS/EHS direct reports
Demonstrated experience managing WHS compliance, incident investigations, and injury management programs
Robust working knowledge of ISO ***** or AS/NZS **** safety management systems
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels
High levels of personal integrity, professional judgement, and the courage to challenge unsafe practices.
