About the Role
The Waste Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing waste management activities to ensure the safe, effective, compliant, and environmentally responsible handling, collection, treatment, recycling, and disposal of waste. The role supports waste reduction initiatives, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement in waste operations.
Key Responsibilites
- Develop and implement waste management policies, procedures, and operational plans.
- Oversee waste collection, segregation, storage, transportation, recycling, treatment, and disposal activities.
- Ensure compliance with applicable environmental, health and safety, and waste-management regulations.
- Monitor waste volumes, disposal routes, recycling rates, costs, and contractor performance.
- Maintain accurate waste records, manifests, permits, inspection reports, and compliance documentation.
- Conduct regular site inspections, risk assessments, and audits of waste-handling areas and processes.
- Identify opportunities to reduce waste generation, improve recycling, and minimize disposal costs.
- Manage relationships with waste contractors, recycling providers, regulators, and internal stakeholders.
- Prepare budgets, forecasts, performance reports, and recommendations for management.
- Investigate incidents, non-conformities, spills, or complaints and implement corrective actions.
- Train employees on waste segregation, safe handling procedures, environmental practices, and regulatory requirements.
- Lead continuous-improvement projects related to sustainability, resource recovery, and circular-economy practices.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Waste Management, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Relevant professional certification in environmental or waste management is an advantage.
- Proven experience in waste management, environmental operations, recycling, facilities management, or a similar role.
- Experience with hazardous and non-hazardous waste handling, where relevant to the organization.
- Demonstrated experience managing waste contractors, budgets, compliance records, and operational projects.
- Working knowledge of local and national environmental legislation, permits, and reporting requirements.
- Experience conducting inspections, audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
