The NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Inc. (NSW AECG) is looking for highly motivated well organised individuals to join our NSW AECG Training team.

The NSW AECG Inc. is a non-profit Aboriginal community-controlled organisation that provides advice on all matters relevant to education and training, with the mandate that this advice represents the Aboriginal community viewpoint. The NSW AECG promotes respect, empowerment and self-determination and believes the process of collaborative consultation is integral to equal partnership and is fundamental to the achievement of equality. The NSW AECG advocates cultural affirmation, integrity, and the pursuit of equality to ensure that the unique and diverse identity of Aboriginal students is recognised and valued.

A NSW Government priority is to increase Aboriginal student engagement and HSC attainment while ensuring cultural wellbeing.

The Community Connector is an “outside of school gate”initiative working alongside students to help them overcome barriers in their lives that may be holding them back from engaging in school and realising their educational aspirations.

Community Connectors work holistically with NSW secondary students, particularly those in years 10, 11 and 12 who may be at risk of disengaging from school or not achieving their full potential. They develop student-centred plans that identify services to support students to complete their schooling. Their primary aim is to ensure students and families are “connected” to services they need and that services are actively engaged. This includes working closely with schools in relation to academic and cultural supports and helping to transform the way government services engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families.

As the Community Connector is an Aboriginal identified position, they use their extensive cultural knowledge and connections to support young people to strengthen their cultural identity.



They also leverage and strengthen the relationships the NSW AECG has with the Aboriginal community and broader community.

Essential requirements for this role.

This is an identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identify as an Aboriginal person, and be accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).

Possession of a community/social welfare/youth work or similar qualification from a recognised tertiary institution, or willingness to undertake a tertiary qualification during the 3-year term.

Demonstrated understanding of human services

Prior experience working with clients and families experiencing barriers to service access including the development of referral, intake, case coordination and exit processes

Knowledge and experience in person centered planning and support coordination and demonstrated, understanding of strength-based approaches across a young cohort and person centric approaches

Capacity to manage support for students through brokerage agreements/procurement of services

Demonstrated understanding of the challenges faced by Aboriginal young people, families and communities

Extensive knowledge of and connection to the local community and demonstrated experience in community engagement

Have a valid and current;

Current Driver’s License

Whilst not mandatory, possession of the following is highly desirable:

Valid First Aid Certificate

Qualification in Mentoring or proven experience in mentoring youth

Key capabilities

Within the context of the role described above, the ideal applicant will be someone who has the following key capabilities:

Proven cultural understanding and community experience:





Ability to apply Aboriginal social and cultural protocols in a variety of settings

Possess a robust understanding of Aboriginal culture, and an ability to demonstrate respect from the local community

Effectively engages/works with network of elders and mentors/ role models within the Aboriginal Community

Provide referrals to culturally appropriate counselling and other support services for Aboriginal young people and their families

Ability to advocate and educate/provide guidance around key issues facing Aboriginal young people and their families

Displays initiative, drive and integrity:

Ability to act with empathy to be an effective advocate for Aboriginal young people and their families

Be proactive and adaptable to changing circumstances

Be resourceful and self-directed in seeking options to support students

This role will be full time – 35 hours per week. A three-year contract will be offered to the successful candidate, with the possibility of an extension. Salary is negotiable up to $125,000 per annum based on demonstrated and proven experience. Salary excludes superannuation and other eligible allowances.

Location: Armidale

(Positions will be required to work across multiple townships)
