Leading routine water, environmental and advanced fish health testing, including proficient microscope use for parasite detection and identification (e.g. gill parasites such as Cryptocaryon).
Coordinating laboratory activities, including sample collection and processing, equipment maintenance, diagnostic workflows, data recording and quality standards for lab operations.
Identifying, monitoring and contributing to the proactive management of algae in production ponds, including species recognition and early intervention strategies.
Feeding and maintaining healthy fish stocks with a strong focus on fish health management and early intervention.
Executing daily production plans.
Maintaining accurate data, documentation and reporting to a high standard, including fish health records and laboratory results.
Mentoring and training technicians on laboratory techniques, microscope use, parasite detection protocols and standard operating procedures.
Maintaining a safe and clean work environment.
Pond monitoring and oversight of farm production operations.
Adhering to Standard Operating Procedures, Food Safety, Animal husbandry and Workplace Health & Safety Systems and quality assurance regulations to ensure a high standard of operation.
Manage laboratory inventory and stocktakes.
Preferred Qualified experience
Proven experience as a Fish Health/Aquaculture Technician (or equivalent) in a commercial barramundi or marine finfish farming operation.
Strong hands-on experience and demonstrated competence in microscope use for parasite detection and identification.
In-depth practical knowledge and experience in algae identification and management in aquaculture pond systems.
Experience coordinating or working within a laboratory setting in aquaculture or a similar primary production environment.
Excellent team orientation with strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to mentor and coordinate with colleagues.
A strong sense of personal accountability, responsibility and attention to detail.
Flexibility to support varied tasks and production needs.
Australian resident or currently hold a valid visa with long term work rights in Australia.
Previous experience in a lead or senior technician role (highly regarded).
Current C Class manual driver's licence and reliable vehicle.
Previous experience operating farm machinery and equipment.
Reside in (or be willing to relocate to) the local Far North Queensland area.
Formal qualifications or training in aquaculture, aquatic animal health or laboratory techniques.
