The Opportunities
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is a critical enabler for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's (DFAT) ability to deliver strategic functions supporting the Australian Government.
ICT systems and processes seek to advance Australia's strategic and economic interests across the globe.
Our global ICT infrastructure and services must be reliable, well governed and supported through contemporary technology to meet the needs of Australians and the Australian Government in the face of changing geostrategic circumstances.
The Information Management and Technology Division (IMD) oversee ICT functions vital to DFAT's operations.
This includes managing technology infrastructure, delivering comprehensive ICT services and support, safeguarding data integrity and security, and strategies for future technological advancements aligned with organisational objectives.
DFAT provides secure ICT services for 243 sites in Australia and abroad, supporting over 115 diplomatic posts across 89 countries, as well as ministerial and state offices.
The department supports more than 18,000 users on our International Communications Network, comprising DFAT staff and staff from 38 partner agencies.
There are multiple roles available across ICT operations, cyber security, ICT strategy, governance, infrastructure, ICT service delivery, application and business solutions development and delivery.




Our Ideal Candidates
We are looking for high-performing people with experience in the above areas of enabling services relevant to the department's operations.
As an APS 6 officer you will:
Have a robust understanding of the important role and functions the ICT, cyber and digital capabilities have in the department and the role they play in the domestic and global arenas.
Apply judgement, knowledge and limited discretion in interpreting and applying legislation, instructions, guidelines and procedures.
Communicate and liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders on a range of ICT operational and strategic matters.
Undertake technical tasks or activities associated with ICT, cyber and digital skills.
Contribute to strategic direction, translating it into operational plans, and perform the role of a supplier for projects to deliver on ICT objectives.
Manage relationships across teams and key stakeholders to assist with change, continuous improvement, and an inclusive and supportive workplace culture.
At this level, candidates are expected to demonstrate competency at the SFIA Levels of Responsibility of level 3 (apply) and level 4 (enable) and can demonstrate an understanding of technology; IT governance and delivery practices; risk management; financial management; commercial/contract management; and talent management.
