About the Law Council of Australia
The Law Council of Australia represents the legal profession at the national level; speaks on behalf of its constituent bodies on federal, national, and international issues; promotes and defends the rule of law; and promotes the administration of justice, access to justice, and general improvement of the law.
The Law Council advises governments, courts, and federal agencies on ways in which the law and the justice system can be improved for the benefit of the community.
The Law Council also represents the Australian legal profession overseas, and maintains close relationships with legal professional bodies throughout the world.
The Law Council was established in ****, and represents its constituent bodies: 16 Australian state and territory law societies and bar associations and Law Firms Australia.
Through these bodies, the Law Council represents more than 110,000 Australian lawyers.

About the position
Policy Lawyers play a key role in developing and advancing the Law Council's policy and advocacy agenda.
Working closely with senior legal practitioners, advisory committees, constituent bodies and stakeholders, you will contribute to legal policy development across a range of Commonwealth legal and public policy issues.
Duties
Researching and analysing complex legal and public policy issues.
Preparing submissions, position papers, briefing notes and correspondence.
Supporting Law Council advisory committees, working groups and constituent bodies.
Monitoring legislative, regulatory and policy developments.
Developing relationships with government agencies,



legal practitioners and other stakeholders.
Representing the Law Council in meetings and consultations.
Contributing to strategic policy and advocacy projects.
About you
We are interested in hearing from candidates who can demonstrate:
An Australian bachelor's degree in law as a minimum.
Postgraduate qualifications are considered highly desirable.
Candidates who have been admitted to legal practice in Australia will be preferred.
Post-admission experience in legal practice, government, policy development, advocacy, regulation or a related field.
Demonstrated ability to analyse complex legal and public policy issues and develop practical, evidence-based policy positions.
Strong legal research, drafting and analytical skills, with the ability to prepare high-quality submissions, briefing papers, correspondence and reports.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively.
A sound understanding of Australia's legal, parliamentary and political systems.
Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver outcomes within tight timeframes.
High attention to detail, sound judgment and a commitment to skilled integrity.
Desirable
Experience working with committees, boards,



member-based organisations or qualified associations.
Experience preparing submissions to government, parliamentary inquiries, regulators or law reform bodies.
Knowledge of Commonwealth legal and public policy processes.
Experience in government, legal practice, policy development, advocacy, parliamentary processes or stakeholder engagement will be highly regarded.
