ABOUT WUNGENING'S RESEARCH & EVALUATION TEAM
Wungening Research and Evaluation Team has a remit to increase the organisation's capacity to engage in, and lead, culturally centred and community-endorsed research, embed evaluation within programs to establish an evidence base, and in the long term, understand our impact and success in supporting the community.
We have been involved in over 25 research projects and supported several evaluations.
We have also led a major research project which went on to win the prestigious Lowitja Institute's Tarrn Doon Nonin Award which recognises an ACCO-led research project on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing that is conducted to an exemplary standard in line with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ethical principles and practices.
Our strong focus now is investing in decolonising data, evaluation and research.
This includes Aboriginal-led approaches and shaping of data, evaluation and research, based in Aboriginal values systems, and establishing frameworks and protocols for control of the collection, access, analysis, interpretation, management, dissemination and re-use of our data.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Wungening is in the process of developing and implementing a data governance framework and systems that align with Aboriginal Data Sovereignty.
This work applies a culturally centred data lens that reflects Aboriginal world views and is embedded across all aspects of the organisation, including contracting, programs, research, evaluation and communications.
While the Research and Evaluation team works very collaboratively, this position will be responsible for coordinating project activities that support Wungening's obligations and commitment to the community with regards to Aboriginal Data Sovereignty.
This includes supporting and enhancing the infrastructure,



systems and practices that enable Aboriginal people to maintain control of their stories and data, ensuring their information is managed in ways that are culturally secure, protected and trusted.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate, co-chair and support the ongoing operation of Wungening's data governance and sovereignty committee.
Monitor and assess the organisation's data sovereignty maturity and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
Identify and respond to emerging enablers, risks and barriers to strengthening Aboriginal data governance and sovereignty.
Coordinate and facilitate ongoing data literacy and capability development across the organisation.
Collaboratively develop, maintain, review and continuously improve organisation-wide culturally centred data governance/sovereignty framework, policies, processes and guidelines that promote CARE principles.
Collaborate with the IT team to enhance systems for storing, organising, and safeguarding all of Wungening data aligned with ADS principles to allow people to maintain control of their stories and data have confidence that their information is protected.
Monitor and support the consistent implementation of data governance processes to ensure Wungening's data standards, protocols and governance requirements are understood, transparent and upheld by internal and external data stakeholders.
Collaborate with the Coordinators Impact and Evaluation to strengthen organisational capability to analyse data and use evidence to inform self-determined, community-led decision-making and solutions through availability of data processes aligned with data sovereignty.
Resource advocacy with partner organisations, including government agencies,



to promote understanding and adoption of Aboriginal data sovereignty principles and culturally responsive data practices.
Collaboratively advocate for and support improved community access to existing Aboriginal data sets, consistent with Aboriginal Data Sovereignty principles.
Essential Criteria
Aboriginality is an essential requirement of this position.
Sound knowledge and understanding of First Australian cultures and societies from an historical perspective and the issues which impact upon them in contemporary society.
Tertiary qualification (e.g. social sciences, Indigenous studies, social impact studies) or equivalent experience, including, for example, understanding of the community services sector, Aboriginal data sovereignty, or culturally centred evaluation and research.
Excellent and demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to liaise with Elders and the broader Aboriginal community and to facilitate engagement groups.
Relevant computer skills in MS Office software and applications and data management systems.
