Role Summary The AIX Engineer is responsible for the administration, maintenance, support and optimisation of IBM AIX operating systems within a mission-critical enterprise setting. The role includes operating system administration, provisioning, patch management, user and access administration, backup and recovery, storage and file system management, compliance, performance optimisation and vendor coordination.
The engineer will work closely with infrastructure, application, database, storage, network and security teams to ensure high availability, operational stability and compliance across the AIX platform. Key Responsibilities
Operating System Administration
Administer and maintain IBM AIX operating systems across production, test and development environments.
Perform system provisioning, installation, configuration and decommissioning.
Monitor system health, availability and performance.
Troubleshoot operating system issues and perform root cause analysis.
Perform capacity planning and system optimisation. Provisioning, Patching & Upgrades
Build and provision new AIX servers.
Perform operating system patching and technology level (TL/SP) upgrades.
Coordinate maintenance activities and planned outages.
Validate system functionality following upgrades and patches.
Maintain standard operating procedures for patch management.
User & Access Administration
Create, modify and remove user accounts.
Manage groups, permissions and role-based access controls.
Administer SSH keys and privileged access.
Support audit and security compliance requirements.
Review and maintain system access controls.
Backup & Recovery
Perform operating system backup and recovery activities.
Support backup validation and restore testing.
Coordinate recovery activities during incidents.
Ensure backup policies comply with enterprise standards.
Support disaster recovery exercises.
Storage & File System Management
Manage AIX file systems, logical volumes and volume groups.
Perform storage allocation and expansion activities.
Optimise storage utilisation and file system performance.
Monitor disk usage and capacity.
Support SAN storage integration.
Performance & Capacity Management
Monitor CPU, memory, disk and I/O performance.
Analyse system bottlenecks and recommend improvements.
Tune operating system parameters.
Support performance troubleshooting across infrastructure components.
Vendor Management
Liaise with IBM and other technology vendors for technical support.
Raise and manage vendor support cases.
Coordinate issue resolution and software fixes.
Participate in vendor-led maintenance activities.
Security & Compliance
Ensure AIX environments comply with organisational security standards.
Support vulnerability remediation.
Implement operating system hardening.
Assist with security audits and compliance reporting.
Maintain configuration standards and documentation.
Incident & Problem Management
Investigate and resolve Level 2 and Level 3 incidents.
Perform root cause analysis for recurring issues.
Participate in major incident resolution.
Maintain knowledge articles and operational documentation.
Change & Release Management
Participate in change planning and implementation.
Execute infrastructure changes in accordance with ITIL processes.
Support release deployments and post-implementation validation.
Maintain change records and technical documentation.
Documentation
Maintain system documentation, build guides and operational procedures.
Document configuration changes and environment updates.
Develop knowledge articles and support documentation.

Experience supporting mission-critical production systems.
Experience with IBM Power Systems and Virtual I/O Server (VIOS).
Strong troubleshooting and performance tuning experience.
Experience working within ITIL-based managed services environments.
Experience coordinating with IBM support and third-party vendors.

Skills
IBM PowerHA / HACMP
NIM (Network Installation Manager)
Automation using Ansible or similar tools
VMware and Linux administration (desirable)
Cloud platform exposure (AWS, Azure or Hybrid Cloud)
