Civil Engineer | SmartX Pty Ltd
$90,000–$100,000 per year + superannuation Established in 2018, SmartX Pty Ltd is a surveying and civil engineering consultancy. We combine advanced data capture technologies with powerful processing tools to deliver detailed site analysis, enabling clients to make informed and efficient project decisions. We perform stormwater and flood analysis as well as road and pavement design.
We also specialise in scan-to-BIM reality capture, GIS and machine control. We support clients across the construction, design, development and property management sectors.
About the role
We are seeking a Civil Engineer to work on a range of civil infrastructure projects. This is a full-time permanent position, 38 hours per week, based at our Burnley office and reporting to the General Manager.
You will apply your tertiary qualifications and practical experience to support our clients through quality control of civil designs, 3D modelling, design revisions and survey collaboration, across three main areas: constructable 3D modelling, design engineering, and survey support.
Key responsibilities — Constructable 3D modelling
Design constructable 3D models for a wide range of civil projects.
Review existing civil engineering designs for real-world constructability and recommend revisions where necessary.
Collaborate directly with clients to resolve design issues and ensure deliverables are construction ready.
Liaise closely with construction supervisors to explain earthworks models, including subgrade models and material layering for differing construction projects, including pavements.
Perform earthworks volume calculations to balance bulk earthworks and optimise haulage, extending to detailed mass haul analysis.
Conduct quantity take-offs during the tender phase, including linear alignment-based take-offs for roads and pipelines.
Work alongside the SmartX survey team to optimise survey methodology for greenfield, brownfield and underwater sites.
Deliverables include machine control-ready 3D models compatible with Trimble, Topcon, Leica, Hemisphere and similar systems; survey-ready models for GNSS field devices, total stations and machine control technology; drafted plans suitable for authority or client approval; materials quantity take-off, earthworks and stockpile reports; and augmented reality models.
Key responsibilities — Civil design engineering
Design and develop civil infrastructure projects including roads, drainage, earthworks and utilities.
Prepare technical reports, specifications and estimates.
Conduct site inspections and supervise construction activities to ensure compliance with design and safety standards.
Liaise with clients, contractors, local councils and regulatory bodies.
Perform risk assessments and ensure adherence to environmental and safety regulations.
Use civil engineering software for design and documentation.
Contribute to project planning, scheduling and budgeting.
Support junior engineers and other staff, providing technical guidance as needed.
Supervise and review the work of other staff, including surveyors, engineers and technicians, in the production of civil engineering designs and 3D models.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and innovation in engineering practices. Deliverables include detailed design drawings for roads, drainage,
earthworks and utilities; technical reports; material and construction specifications; cost estimates and quantity take-offs; site inspection logs and compliance reports; safety and quality assurance documentation; environmental impact and safety risk assessments and mitigation plans; CAD files and BIM models; and project schedules.
Key responsibilities — Survey support
Determine optimal survey control setup, including traverses and post-processed kinematic GNSS.
Recommend the most efficient data capture methods, including total station or GNSS pickup, photogrammetry or satellite imagery, blade-tip mapping via machine control, terrestrial laser scanning and hydrographic sounding. Deliverables include survey control plans, survey data, photogrammetry and imagery datasets, blade-tip mapping outputs, terrestrial laser scanning data, RTK drone aerial surveys and hydrographic sounding.
Essential qualifications
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in civil engineering
Valid Australian driver’s licence.
Experience and skills
Experience in civil engineering design and delivery, preferably in urban infrastructure, roading and/or land development.
Hands-on surveying experience, including field data capture, survey control and set-out — this role works alongside our survey team and requires practical familiarity with survey methods, not just design office experience.
Proficiency in Trimble Business Center for civil design, 3D modelling and machine control data preparation.
Experience with other civil design software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, 12d Model or similar.
Solid understanding of Australian engineering standards, codes and local council requirements.
Experience in contract administration and construction supervision.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Desirable
Postgraduate qualifications in civil infrastructure, project management or a related field.
White Card (Construction Induction Training).
Certification in stormwater design or environmental engineering.
Experience with GNSS field devices, total stations, terrestrial laser scanning or machine control systems.
