Join VMIA as a Construction Underwriter and play a key role in VMIA’s support of Victoria's largest infrastructure projects. Working alongside industry experts, you'll deliver specialist insurance solutions, provide strategic risk advice, and help protect the projects that keep Victoria moving from transport and hospitals to schools and other major government initiatives.

About the role Join VMIA as a Construction Underwriter and play a pivotal role in supporting Victoria's largest infrastructure projects. As part of the Infrastructure & Energy Team, you'll provide specialist underwriting expertise, strategic insurance advice, and innovative risk solutions for major government initiatives, including transport, health, education, and other landmark developments across the State.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on complex, high-profile projects while collaborating with industry experts, brokers, reinsurers, and government stakeholders to deliver best-practice insurance solutions.

Key responsibilities

- Underwrite and manage a portfolio of construction insurance risks for major infrastructure projects.
- Develop and implement insurance strategies that align with client needs and VMIA's objectives.
- Provide specialist advice on construction insurance products, policy coverage, and risk transfer solutions.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, brokers, reinsurers, and internal stakeholders.
- Analyse underwriting data and portfolio performance to support strategic decision-making.
- Monitor market trends, legal developments, and emerging risks to ensure products remain competitive and fit for purpose.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives, product development, and underwriting best practices.
- Contribute to client presentations, training sessions, and industry engagement activities.

Who you work with You'll work closely with the Infrastructure & Energy Team , Pricing & Capital Management, Claims, Finance, and the broader Risk, Insurance & Claims Solutions Division.

Externally, you'll collaborate with government clients,



insurance brokers, reinsurers, and other industry partners to deliver effective insurance programs and trusted advisory services.

What we are looking for

- We're looking for a commercially minded insurance professional who enjoys solving complex problems and building trusted relationships.
- You'll bring:
- Strong experience in underwriting, broking, or commercial insurance.
- Excellent knowledge of general insurance principles and commercial insurance products.
- Experience providing strategic insurance advice to clients and stakeholders.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and make sound underwriting decisions.
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder and relationship management skills.
- The ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining a high level of client service.
- A collaborative approach with a passion for continuous improvement and innovation.
- Experience with construction industry, construction insurance and /or reinsurance programs will be highly regarded.

Qualifications

- Minimum 5 years' experience in insurance underwriting, broking, or a related insurance discipline (experience in construction insurance is highly desirable).
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline or insurance-related professional qualifications are highly regarded.
- ANZIIF membership (or equivalent professional accreditation) is desirable.
- Must satisfy APRA Fit and Proper requirements.

Salary Information

At VMIA, we offer competitive salaries based on the role's classification and your skills and experience. Typically, new employees start at the minimum of the salary range, however, consideration may be given to starting above the minimum of the band should you demonstrate extensive experience in a similar role or possess unique and desirable skills and capabilities required to perform the role.
