About the opportunity
We are representing an established Australian consumer services group with a large franchised, owner-operated network across Australia. Within the broader group sits a proprietary consumer products division with meaningful existing turnover, embedded distribution through the network, a growing direct-to-consumer channel and significant untapped upside.
This is a newly elevated General Manager mandate. The business is not looking for a traditional sales lead, product manager or marketing specialist. It is seeking a commercially mature operator who can take an established but under-optimised product division and turn it into a more disciplined, scalable and measurable growth engine.
The broader group is founder-led, relationship-based and now moving through a period of professionalisation. The product division has strong embedded advantages, including access to a large customer base, trusted frontline advocacy, existing product IP, physical network distribution and e-commerce potential. However, it also requires sharper systems, process, portfolio discipline, supply-chain management, channel execution and commercial cadence.
For the right person, this is a genuine career step-up opportunity: a first-time GM role with real autonomy, manageable P&L; scale, visible upside and the opportunity to build the operating model that a more mature product business would normally already have.
The mandate The General Manager will lead the product division as a commercially accountable business unit, reporting to the CEO and working closely with operations, marketing, e-commerce, finance, supply chain and founder/shareholder stakeholders.
The core priority is to make the existing network channel work harder and more consistently. E-commerce is important, but the immediate value lever is improving physical channel sell-through, frontline recommendation, owner/operator engagement, product availability, portfolio clarity and repeatable execution across the network.
This is a role for someone who enjoys building the machine while running it. The business has genuine momentum and meaningful low-hanging fruit, but it does not yet have all the dashboards, decision rights, category rhythms, supply-chain processes or cross-functional ways of working that a more mature consumer products platform would typically have.
Key accountabilities The GM will be responsible for:
P&L; and commercial performance
Own product revenue, margin, contribution, pricing, promotional ROI, channel performance, operating dashboards and commercial reporting.
Network channel sell-through
Improve product attachment, frontline confidence, merchandising, owner/operator economics, training, incentives and best-practice sharing across a large distributed network.
Portfolio and category strategy
Simplify and sharpen the product range, identify hero products, rationalise underperforming SKUs,
clarify customer navigation and create a more disciplined approach to product development.
Supply chain and inventory
Improve contract manufacturer management, forecasting, stock availability, service levels, inventory health, working capital discipline and logistics performance.
3PL and operating-model transition
Support the migration from an internally managed warehouse/pick-pack setting toward a more scalable third-party logistics model.
E-commerce and customer data
Improve online conversion, repeat purchase, replenishment, product content, customer journeys and data visibility, while ensuring digital growth supports the physical network rather than competing with it.
Marketing and cross-functional leadership
Partner closely with shared marketing, creative and e-commerce resources to ensure the product division has a coherent brand, trading rhythm and customer engagement model.
Operating cadence and process
Build the systems, frameworks, meeting rhythms, dashboards and decision rights required to move from an informal, relationship-led model to a more disciplined GM-led product platform.
International readiness
Support selected offshore pathways over time, but only once the Australian model, portfolio, supply chain, channel economics and execution disciplines are stronger.
What success will look like In the first 12 to 24 months, success is likely to include:
- A clear product strategy and category roadmap.
- Improved physical channel sell-through and product attachment.
- Stronger frontline engagement and product recommendation confidence.
- A simpler, more commercially focused product portfolio.
- Better SKU productivity, gross margin visibility and working capital discipline.
- More reliable supply chain, forecasting, availability and logistics performance.
- Improved e-commerce conversion, repeat purchase and customer lifecycle activity.
- Clearer dashboards and KPIs across revenue, margin, channel performance and inventory.
- A more credible product contribution to the broader group’s growth and enterprise value story.
The ideal candidate
This role is likely to suit a senior commercial, sales, category, channel, product, supply-chain, marketing/e-commerce or divisional leader who is ready to step into a true GM role.
You may come from consumer products, FMCG, pharmacy, health and wellness, QSR, franchise-adjacent product models, distributed retail channels, multi-site networks or another environment where product performance depends on frontline execution, channel influence,
supply-chain discipline and repeatable systems.
Direct experience in the client’s exact category is not essential. More important is your ability to bring structure, commercial discipline and scalable operating practices into a product business that has historically relied heavily on relationships, sales push and informal ways of working.
The strongest candidates will bring:
- Strong commercial judgment and emerging or established P&L; capability.
- Experience improving sell-through in physical, distributed or owner-operated channels.
- Exposure to contract manufacturers, suppliers, logistics, inventory, forecasting or 3PL environments.
- SKU, portfolio, category or product lifecycle discipline.
- Ability to work with frontline teams, owner/operators or distributed networks.
- Digital and e-commerce fluency, including conversion, repeat purchase, customer data or lifecycle marketing.
- Comfort building dashboards, processes, decision rights and operating cadence.
- Maturity to operate in a founder-led, relationship-based environment undergoing professionalisation.
- Low ego, pragmatism, resilience and the ability to influence without relying solely on hierarchy.
This role will appeal if you are motivated by:
- A first-time GM opportunity with genuine scope and autonomy.
- Taking a credible but under-built product business and creating structure around it.
- Combining strategy with hands-on execution.
- Improving the full value chain from product and supply through to channel sell-through and customer repeat purchase.
- Working in a founder-led business where relationships matter, but where the next phase requires stronger systems and accountability.
- Creating measurable commercial impact rather than simply managing an already mature platform.
This role is less likely to suit someone who:
- Wants a fully polished corporate infrastructure from day one.
- Is primarily a brand marketer without operational, supply-chain or channel execution depth.
- Is looking for a large inherited team and large-company GM environment.
- Prefers pure e-commerce or third-party retail expansion over physical channel optimisation.
- Has limited patience for founder/shareholder history, owner/operator engagement or frontline behaviour change.
- Is uncomfortable building the operating model while also delivering results.
Practical details The role is based in Miranda, Sydney with a practical expectation of regular office presence (3-4 days a week) and sensible flexibility. The direct team will initially be small, with some shared functional resources across marketing, creative and e-commerce. This is part of the opportunity: the incoming GM will help shape the future operating model, team structure, cadence and ways of working.
The salary package will be made up of an approximate base of $225,000 plus superannuation plus an annual STI program.
