About Powerhouse

Powerhouse Museum is located at the intersection of arts, design, science, and technology and plays a critical role in engaging communities with contemporary ideas and issues. It is the custodian of more than half a million objects of national and international significance and is considered one of the finest and most diverse collections in Australia. We are undertaking a landmark $1.3 billion infrastructure renewal program, led by the creation of Powerhouse Parramatta; expanded research and public facilities at Powerhouse Castle Hill; the heritage revitalisation of the iconic Powerhouse Ultimo; and the ongoing operation of Sydney Observatory.

About the Role

Are you interested in science communication and public programming?

As a Parramatta Observatory Intern, you will support the Lang Walker Family academy & Visitor Services team in the development of current public programs and procedures for Parramatta Observatory with a focus towards primary and high school ages children.

Working alongside academy educators, learning managers and visitor services team, you will contribute to projects that explore providing opportunities to inner west Sydney and Regional NSW schools to gain understanding of the field of astronomy and physics. This may include supporting the development of public programs, educational experiences, and excursion activities that encourage curiosity, participation, critical thinking, and most importunately accessibility to all students.





This internship is suited to students with a passion in science communication specifically around astronomy and physics. Interns will participate in project briefings, workshops, presentations, meetings, design reviews, research tasks, and should be comfortable sharing ideas, presenting work-in-progress, responding to feedback, working collaboratively, and managing tasks.

Learning Opportunities

Through this internship, you will have the opportunity to:

- Learn how visitor services, programs and the education team collaborate to create engaging educational programs

- Build practical skills in telescope equipment and software operation, curriculum program development and procedural documentation

- Develop confidence in presenting ideas, responding to feedback, communicating with stakeholders and contributing to meetings

- Explore how Powerhouse translates complex scientific content into engaging easy to understand programs
