How the role developed

Actuarial science has a long history in the UK — the Institute of Actuaries was founded in 1848, making it one of the oldest professional bodies in financial services. The profession grew around life insurance and pensions, where the ability to model long-term financial uncertainty was commercially essential.

The development of Lloyd's of London as the global centre for specialist insurance further embedded actuarial work in the UK financial ecosystem. The Solvency II directive, retained in UK law post-Brexit as UK Solvency II, formalised actuarial requirements for insurers and placed the Chief Actuary as a controlled function under regulatory oversight.
