POSITION PURPOSE STATEMENT The National Tax Group upholds technical excellence across the Tax Advisory practice through specialised training. This group leads the development of tax thought leadership and legislation, staying current with the latest developments, including key legislative updates, recent cases, and ATO public rulings and practices. By doing so, the group empowers the Tax Advisory practice to provide comprehensive and timely advice to clients.

The National Tax Group also regularly consults with government, industry bodies and regulators on issues and emerging developments that impact clients, with a particular focus on privately owned groups and mid-market businesses. The group makes submissions and advocate for fair outcomes, reduced compliance costs and an overall better tax and regulatory regime.

The Transaction Taxes team is comprised of two core streams: GST and State Taxes (Land Tax/Stamp Duty/Other Property Taxes). The team operates as a cohesive part of the broader Tax Advisory practice.

The primary focus of this position is to enhance and leverage technical expertise in State Taxes for the National Tax Group, the broader Tax Advisory practice and the firm and clients more generally. Key responsibilities include keeping abreast of developments in the State Taxes space, facilitating training sessions, developing presentation and training materials, and identifying ongoing training needs.

Depending on individual preference, there is also the opportunity to integrate some client work within the scope of this role.





POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Learning, Training and Development

- Facilitate training sessions, including regular State Taxes training for the Transaction Taxes team, and deliver both internal training and occasional external presentations.
- Develop State Taxes presentation materials and learning modules for clients and staff.
- Continuously identify State Taxes training needs within the firm in collaboration with the Transaction Taxes team, learning and training coordinators, relevant partners, and practice managers.
- Stay up to date on developments in State Taxes, keep the Transaction Taxes team and other relevant teams informed about the developments, prepare transaction taxes bulletins and issue relevant thought leadership insights.

Risk and Opportunity Analysis

- Explore potential opportunities and identify risks associated with existing State Taxes laws and policies, as well as any changes in policy and legislation.

Advocacy and Submissions

- Prepare written submissions to government and revenue authorities on behalf of Pitcher Partners or industry bodies as part of consultation processes, advocating for specific tax and duty issues.

Client Support

- Assist with client matters related to State Taxes as needed and if desired, including conducting research, preparing written submissions, and mentoring junior staff members.

POSITION SUCCESS PROFILE

Qualifications:

- A relevant law and/or accounting degree.

Experience:

- At least 5 years’ experience in State Taxes, from professional practice, a state revenue office and/or an industry based role.

Attributes/skills:

- Effective communicator (verbal and written).




- Robust legislative interpretation and tax technical skills.
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships and to work confidently with people at all levels.
- Ability to think clearly and systematically, whilst providing creative learning solutions.
