Manager – Business Services & Tax
Sydney CBD | Full-time | Five days in the office
Clarence Street, a short walk from Wynyard Station
BPAG (Best Practice Accounting Group) has merged five firms nationally and is now a Top 100 firm by revenue. We need a Manager to own a portfolio and team while helping the new group work as one.
It suits someone pursuing senior leadership, Director or Partner level—not a lateral move for the same job. Progress comes from ownership, feedback, hard problems and developing people.
Why now
We are creating one client standard: transparent scope, current numbers, thorough review, straight answers and no surprises—using the best processes from five firms.
BPAG works year-round: keeping the finance function moving, planning tax before year-end, watching cash flow and margins, and giving owners reliable decisions. You will not do every task; you will make it join up.
The role
You will manage owner-operated businesses and related companies, trusts, partnerships, individuals and SMSFs. A week could include group financial statements, Division 7A, cash-flow or structure discussions, an over-budget job and coaching an accountant.
You will:
- Review financial statements, tax returns and supporting work; ensure books and reporting support your advice.
- Own year-round client relationships and tax planning across CGT, Division 7A, FBT, GST, structures and succession, involving specialists when needed.
- Explain changes, implications and next steps in plain English.
- Scope, price and budget work; allocate staff and manage jobs through review, billing and completion, addressing overruns and scope creep early.
- Develop junior and intermediate accountants with review notes that teach.
- Establish common templates, review standards and workflows; fix recurring technical and process problems at their source.
How BPAG runs its work BPAG runs on Nagaris for client groups, engagements, onboarding and jobs, budgets and tasks—showing status, ownership and what is waiting. Managers keep it current; workflow cannot live in private inboxes, memories or spreadsheets.
You need not know Nagaris, but must learn systems quickly, use them properly and help your team do the same.
How we use AI
We have built 70+ proprietary AI agents inside Nagaris for specific Australian accounting work. Each has defined inputs, outputs, technical boundaries and a handback to an accountant. For complex matters, our Workflow Orchestrator coordinates specialists, carries context and adds risk-based human checkpoints.
The accountant remains responsible. You will select the agent, provide clean facts and context, check legislation, sources, assumptions and calculation workbooks, catch incomplete or overconfident answers, exercise judgment and approve client work. You will teach the team and improve the library by identifying gaps, testing workflows and documenting weaknesses.
You need not be a developer, but must care how work is designed, controlled and improved.
Agents speed research, preparation and routine work; they raise the standard for judgment, client conversations and staff development. We will ask for an AI or automation example and how you checked it.
What we are looking for
- CA, CPA or recognised equivalent, with typically 7+ years of Australian business-services and tax experience.
- Portfolio ownership, complex review experience and strong Australian tax knowledge for private businesses and family groups—communicated without jargon.
- Workflow, deadline and people-management experience, plus commercial control of scope, budgets, write-offs and portfolio profitability.
- Confidence with modern systems and thoughtful AI or automation use; judgment to act while knowing when to involve a specialist or partner.
- Ambition to progress beyond portfolio management into senior firm leadership.
The office and opportunity This is a five-day in-office role on Clarence Street, Sydney CBD, near Wynyard—not remote or hybrid. Five teams are becoming one, staff are being coached and new ways of working established; this happens faster and better together.
You will gain experience beyond file review: client leadership, staff development, pricing, portfolio performance, technology, process design and five-firm integration. Responsibility is available now.
Apply
Send your CV and a short note describing:
1. A client, team or workflow problem you owned and improved.
2. Skilled work you improved with AI or automation, and how you verified it.
We care more about what you changed and how you approached it than which software you used.
