The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

Your Impact

As a valued member of the Criminal Law Practice, you'll play a key role in delivering high-quality legal advice and representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients across NSW and the ACT. By providing relief support to ALS offices, you'll help ensure communities continue to receive culturally appropriate legal services while contributing to strong legal practice, collaboration, and operational excellence. Each day, you will:

- Provide high-quality legal advice, representation, and advocacy for Aboriginal clients across a range of criminal law matters.
- Appear in Local, Children's, District, and other courts, managing matters from mentions through to hearings, appeals, and trials.
- Travel to ALS offices across NSW to provide criminal law relief and maintain continuity of legal services.
- Prepare legal research, briefs for counsel, court documents, and case strategies to achieve the best outcomes for clients.




- Mentor and support junior solicitors while promoting best practice in file management, compliance, and legal operations.
- Build strong relationships with clients, communities, courts, and partner agencies, while working collaboratively with legal, field, and administrative teams.

Your Story & Strengths You are a skilled and motivated Senior Solicitor with substantial experience in criminal law and a genuine commitment to achieving justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You understand and respect the cultural, social, and historical factors that shape the experiences of the communities you work with and bring sound judgement, resilience, and professionalism to every matter. Key strengths include:

- A NSW Practising Certificate and a minimum of 4 years' experience in criminal law.
- Demonstrated expertise in criminal law practice and procedure, with the ability to confidently manage complex matters and appear across multiple court jurisdictions.
- Proven ability to provide high-quality legal advice, advocacy, and representation while managing competing priorities and demanding caseloads.
- A willingness and ability to travel to metropolitan, regional, and remote ALS offices across NSW and the ACT, including extended stays when required.
- Excellent communication, legal research, analytical,



and problem-solving skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships with clients, colleagues, counsel, and external stakeholders.
- A current unrestricted NSW Driver Licence and a commitment to ethical practice, cultural respect, and delivering client-centred legal services.
