Aboriginal Investment NT is a corporate Commonwealth entity, established under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (Northern Territory) 1976 and designed in partnership with Aboriginal Territorians.
They manage grant funding and a growing investment corpus with a single goal: to deliver lasting economic, social and cultural outcomes for Aboriginal Territorians, guided by an Aboriginal-controlled Board and a shared vision of self-determination.
About the role
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, you'll provide whole-of-function leadership across their commercial investment portfolio, Nation-Building Investments, investment governance, stakeholder relationships, capability development and performance reporting.
You won't need to be the principal technical expert in every discipline.
You will need the investment experience and commercial judgement to independently challenge technical advice, external managers and advisers coupled with the leadership to reduce key-person dependency and build sustainable Aboriginal investment leadership and professional pathways in the Territory.
What you'll do
- Lead and coordinate the investment function across commercial and Nation-Building investments, governance, risk, performance and reporting
- Build and develop a high-performing, multidisciplinary team with clear accountabilities and genuine succession planning
- Provide executive oversight of the commercial portfolio including asset allocation, portfolio construction, external manager oversight, performance, liquidity, cost and risk
- Provide executive oversight of Nation-Building and direct investments,
ensuring proportionate due diligence against commercial, strategic, impact, cultural, governance and risk objectives
- Maintain a whole-of-portfolio view of performance, valuation, concentration, counterparty exposure and emerging risk and **escalate** what matters, promptly
- Ensure investment papers and performance reporting reaching decision-makers are accurate, evidence-based and decision-ready
- Build trusted relationships with Aboriginal organisations, Traditional Owners, communities, government, co-investors, advisers and institutional partners
- Develop Aboriginal investment capability, employment and succession pathways
About you
- Substantial senior experience in institutional investment, funds management, banking, corporate finance, private capital, infrastructure investment or an equivalent commercial investment workplace
- A proven ability to lead a multidisciplinary investment or commercial function and integrate specialist advice into executive-level decisions
- Strong commercial judgement and the credibility to independently test recommendations, financial analysis, portfolio advice and risk assessments, and to challenge external managers and advisers
- Sound understanding of portfolio construction, investment risk, liquidity, valuation, performance measurement and investment governance
- Experience overseeing or assessing direct debt, direct equity, private market or similar opportunities
- A track record of high-quality advice and briefings to senior executives, Boards or Investment Committees
- Governance and risk experience within a regulated, fiduciary, public-sector or similarly accountable environment
- Strong stakeholder skills and the ability to build trusted relationships with Aboriginal organisations, Traditional Owners, communities and institutional partners
- A genuine understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal people and a demonstrated commitment to Aboriginal self-determination, community-led development and culturally respectful engagement
Highly regarded
- Experience in Aboriginal economic development, impact investment or Nation-Building investment
- Knowledge of the Northern Territory and experience engaging with Aboriginal communities and organisations
- Experience managing external fund managers, custodians, investment consultants and institutional service providers
- Postgraduate qualifications or professional accreditation such as CFA, CPA, CA, MBA or GAICD
