Yarrabah State School is seeking two caring, proactive and relationship-focused School Support Officers to join our culturally rich and diverse school community.
In this rewarding role, you will work closely with students and school staff to support positive engagement, attendance, behaviour and participation in school.
You will provide practical support and supervision across the school day, including supporting students during breaks, assisting with student programs and helping students successfully transition back to class when required

About our School:
Yarrabah State School is located on the lands of the Gunggandji and Yidinji peoples, and is approximately 50minutes drive the from the centre of Cairns.
Our School is a highly complex multi-campus K-10 school with three separate campuses: State Delivered Kindy, Primary (Prep-year 6) and Secondary (Years 7-10).
The school enrolment is approximately 450 students of which 100% identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
Students speak Yarrie Lingo as their first language, with English taught and learned as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D).
The school also has a robust Gungganji language program, reflecting its commitment to preserving and celebrating local language and culture.

About the Role:
The purpose of a School Support Officer is to assist in improving student attendance, engagement, and wellbeing by providing supervision, targeted support, fostering positive learning experiences, and promoting a safe and inclusive school environment.
School Support Officers will be available before and after school and during break times.
A key part of the role is building strong, respectful relationships with students.
You will work alongside teachers and school leaders to support individual students, monitor their participation and progress, and provide feedback to help improve student outcomes.
Where appropriate, you will also assist in connecting students with relevant school support services.
The successful applicant will demonstrate patience, empathy, initiative and exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.




A commitment to culturally responsive and trauma-informed approaches, student wellbeing and creating a safe and inclusive school environment is highly valued
Responsibilities:
Support student engagement, wellbeing and positive behaviour through supervised programs.
Build positive relationships with students using effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Monitor student progress and refer students to appropriate support services when required.
Supervise students during bus duty, playground duty and other school activities.
Maintain high standards of professionalism and contribute to continuous improvement.
Participate in professional learning and collaborate with school staff to support positive student outcomes.
