PhD prospect - The Evolutionary Biology / Ecology of Stingless Bees
We are seeking an enthusiastic PhD candidate to join a collaborative research project investigating the mechanisms that determine species' geographic range limits in stingless bees.
The position will be based at La Trobe University and co-supervised by Dr Vanessa Kellermann (La Trobe University) and Dr Ros Gloag (University of Sydney), with collaboration across a multidisciplinary research team.
Project overview
Understanding which mechanisms shape insect distributions is central to predicting biodiversity responses to climate change, managing pollinators and pests, and safeguarding ecosystem resilience.
This project will use native Australian stingless bees (Tetragonula spp.) as a tractable field system to test competing predictions about range limits, with a focus on adaptive constraints on cold tolerance.
The work will combine field ecology, experimental transplants, thermal physiology, and quantitative/genomic to test range limit theories.
The project will generate new insights into species' responses to environmental gradients and contribute knowledge relevant to Australia's pollination systems and emerging stingless-bee industries.

Applicants should have:
A background in evolutionary biology, ecology, or a related discipline
Solid motivation for field- and lab-based research
