An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Staff Specialist in Cardiothoracic Surgery to join the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery on a fixed-term, part time basis.
As the sole provider of public cardiothoracic surgical services in Tasmania, the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) offers a unique breadth of clinical practice and a level of professional responsibility rarely matched elsewhere in Australia.
About the Department
The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery currently comprises:
- Three full-time FRACS-qualified Staff Specialists
- One full-time Senior Medical Officer
- One RACS Trainee
- Two Interns
- Dedicated Cardiothoracic Surgery Coordinator and administrative support staff
We provide comprehensive statewide services, including:
- Advanced cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures
- Minimally invasive cardiac and thoracic surgery
- Thoracic aortic surgery
- Statewide outpatient and outreach services through face-to-face and telehealth clinics
- Care for patients across regional and remote communities
Collaborative and Innovative Practice
The unit has a strong culture of multidisciplinary collaboration and clinical excellence. Regular multidisciplinary meetings are held with:
- Interventional and General Cardiologists
- Vascular Surgeons
- Intensive Care and Anaesthetic teams
The Role
- Actively pursue improved outcomes for cardiothoracic surgery patients by participating in teaching and research relevant to the field.
- Deliver safe, high-quality cardiothoracic surgical care to adult patients across elective and acute presentations.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings, including cardiac surgery case conferences and cross‑specialty planning.
- Support the supervision and development of junior medical staff and surgical trainees.
- Participate in on‑call and after‑hours rostering as required under the Staff Specialist Agreement.
You will need
- Fellowship of Royal Australian College of Surgeons in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
- Full AHPRA Registration as a specialist Cardiothoracic Surgeon.
- Documented evidence of experience in Minimal Access Thoracic Surgery.
