The department provides tertiary level ophthalmic services to the children of NSW and secondary level ophthalmology services to children from areas local to the Hospital.
This is a large Paediatric Teaching Hospital with 10,000 outpatient services and 1,800 ophthalmic surgical procedures per annum.
The Ophthalmology Department sees a large number of children with multisystem disorders, and of non-English speaking backgrounds.
The primary goals of the Paediatric Ophthalmology Provisional Fellow position is for the Fellow: To be trained in the subspecialty of Paediatric Ophthalmology and become a competent practitioner in this field.To work in the Ophthalmology Department, Children's Hospital at Westmead, under the direction of the Supervisor of Fellowship Training and other Ophthalmology Consultants, provide patient management including eye surgery to both inpatients and outpatients requiring eye care.To participate in departmental activities including tutorials, journal Clubs, clinical meetings, presentations at various meetings and conferences.To undertake clinical research under the supervision of the Director of Fellowship Training.To participate in teaching of Medical Students, Orthoptic Students, and Ophthalmology Junior Medical Officers.

Selection Criteria:MBBS or equivalent,



currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration categoryDemonstrated experience in a public hospital in the field of Paediatric OphthalmologyDemonstrated competency in examination of children's eyes, including refraction, and use of the slit-lamp microscope and binocular indirect ophthalmoscope, and demonstrated ability to perform basic strabismus surgery, including recession and resection of the horizontal rectus musclesDemonstrated commitment and plans to pursue a career focussed on Paediatric OphthalmologyExcellent communication, leadership and teamwork skills with demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionalsOngoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to teach, and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staffUnderstanding of research methodology or research experience and a willingness to undertake researchDemonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent time management, problem solving skills, clinical skills, judgement and expertise Your application must include a current resume and responses to the application questions and criteria in the online application form.
