About the RoleFrederick Irwin Anglican School is seeking an experienced, innovative and passionate educator to undertake the ongoing role of Head of English (Years 7–12), commencing in ****.
The Head of English is a key leadership position within the Secondary School and plays a significant role in driving excellence in teaching and learning across the English Learning Area.
The successful applicant will provide leadership to English staff, oversee curriculum development and implementation, foster outstanding teaching practice, and promote high levels of student engagement, achievement and literacy outcomes.
The ideal candidate will be an exemplary classroom practitioner who is future-focused, evidence-informed, highly organised and committed to continuous improvement.
They will demonstrate outstanding interpersonal and leadership skills, the ability to build a collaborative and high-performing team culture, and a commitment to supporting the School's Anglican ethos and values.

Frederick Irwin Anglican School teacher salaries are generally 2.5% above comparable Department of Education of Western Australia rates.
Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership
· Lead the English Department in alignment with the School's vision, mission and strategic priorities.
· Develop and implement departmental operational plans that support School improvement goals and enhance student achievement in English.
· Participate in Curriculum Team and leadership meetings, contributing to whole-school planning and decision-making.
· Work collaboratively with School leaders to ensure curriculum continuity, high-quality teaching practices and improved student outcomes in English.
· Lead, mentor and support English staff through effective supervision, professional development and performance management processes.
· Assist with the recruitment, induction and retention of English teaching staff.
· Promote a culture of academic excellence, innovation and continuous improvement within the English Department.
· Monitor and analyse student achievement data to inform departmental priorities and drive improved learning outcomes.
Teaching and Learning
· Model exemplary English teaching practice and promote evidence-based pedagogical approaches across the department.
· Lead the development,



implementation and review of English curriculum programs to ensure alignment with relevant curriculum and assessment requirements.
· Oversee assessment design, moderation and reporting processes to ensure consistency, rigour and high academic standards.
· Monitor student progress and achievement data, using evidence to inform teaching practices and drive continuous improvement.
· Support and mentor English teachers in curriculum planning, differentiated instruction, assessment practices and the effective integration of literacy strategies.
· Promote innovation, creativity and excellence in the teaching and learning of English.
· Facilitate qualified learning opportunities that build staff capacity and support contemporary teaching practices.
· Coordinate and promote co-curricular English opportunities, including writing competitions, debating, public speaking, literary events and enrichment programs that celebrate student achievement.
Staff Leadership and Relationships
· Lead, mentor and support English teachers to achieve high standards of skilled practice and student learning outcomes.
· Facilitate departmental meetings, collaborative planning and professional learning initiatives that support continuous improvement.
· Support staff performance and development through coaching, goal setting, observation and feedback processes.
· Foster a collaborative, inclusive and high-performing departmental culture that values professional growth and shared accountability.
· Build and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, colleagues and external stakeholders.
· Provide leadership and guidance in student wellbeing, engagement, attendance and behaviour management within the English Department.
· Support early career and new staff through effective induction, mentoring and ongoing professional support.
Organisation and Administration
Manage departmental budgets, resources and teaching materials to support effective curriculum delivery.
Oversee the selection, acquisition and maintenance of English teaching resources, including digital platforms, texts and library resources.
Coordinate English-related events and enrichment opportunities, including literary competitions, author visits, debating, public speaking and writing programs.
Manage curriculum documentation, assessment schedules and reporting requirements in accordance with School and system expectations.
Support School processes including subject selection, examinations, moderation, reporting and timetabling requirements.




Monitor departmental performance data and prepare reports to inform planning and improvement initiatives.
Ensure compliance with School policies, curriculum requirements, assessment procedures and child-safe practices.
Maintain effective communication with staff, students and families regarding curriculum, assessment and student achievement.
Pastoral CareAs an Anglican School, pastoral care is extremely important at Frederick Irwin Anglican School.
This is a role of the teachers who manage the supervision and welfare of the students while at school.
