The Opportunity
The Security Engineer in the School of Computer Science and Engineering at UNSW is instrumental in safeguarding the School's digital infrastructure, research data, and teaching environments. The role focuses on proactive security testing, incident response, and collaboration with academic and technical teams to ensure secure computing across diverse platforms. This position plays a key part in identifying vulnerabilities, conducting penetration testing, and enhancing the School's overall cybersecurity posture. The role of Security Engineer reports to the Deputy Head of School (Education) and has no direct reports.
Salary, Level 7: $113,926 - $123,302 per annum + 17% superannuation
Full Time (35 hours)

Skills & Experience
A degree in Cyber Security, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Demonstrated experience in penetration testing and vulnerability management across Linux,
macOS, and Windows environments.
Proficiency with security tools such as SIEM platforms, vulnerability scanners, and forensic toolkits.
Strong understanding of network protocols, operating systems, and secure system administration.
Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Industry certifications such as OSCP, CISSP, CEH, or GIAC.
Experience in a higher education or research computing environment.
Familiarity with cloud security (e.g., AWS, Azure) and DevSecOps practices.
Knowledge of secure coding practices and application security testing.
