Goldfields Region manages 8.6 million hectares of conservation reserves including national parks, conservation parks, nature reserves, timber reserves, State forest and former pastoral leases (proposed reserves). Staff within the region work with traditional owners in many of these reserves to help protect the natural and cultural values of the area and to ensure customary activities and traditional practices are maintained. Goldfields Region is also responsible for fire preparedness, weeds and feral animal control on 40.3 million hectares of unallocated Crown land and unmanaged reserves.

Kalgoorlie is the largest inland city in Western Australia, steeped with history and heritage. It remains a vibrant mining town and home to a young, family‑oriented and multicultural community. Kalgoorlie is a central hub for the arts, leisure and culture in regional WA.

We currently have three opportunities for Fire Operations Officers to join our team.

Fire Operations Officer, Level 3, DBCA and DBCA

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Leader Fire Management, these positions:

- Assist with the preparation and delivery of allocated works within the Goldfields Region, including assisting with the implementation of preparedness and response activities, prescribed burning and fire mitigation programs.
- Assist with the delivery of fire management activities within the Goldfields Region through the coordination, implementation, monitoring and reviewing of fire related projects across departmental managed lands.
- Assist with the management and maintenance of the Goldfields Region fire management equipment and infrastructure, including specialist fire‑fighting equipment, vehicles and airstrips.

Fire Operations Officer, Level 4, DBCA

Under the general supervision of the Regional Leader Fire Management, this position:

- Contributes to the Goldfields Region fire mitigation program. Plans, organises and implements bushfire mitigation works including the strategic fire break network and fuel modification works across departmental managed lands.
- Undertakes a leading role in fire related projects including the preparation of maps, works prescriptions, Disturbance Activity Statements (DAS), and contract management in line with departmental standards.

Selection Criteria

Fire Operations Officer, Level 3, DBCA and DBCA

- Knowledge and experience in working in natural land management or closely related field or related technical area, with preference for knowledge of fire management relating to biodiversity conservation, community and asset protection; including bushfire suppression,



fire mitigation and incident management principles.
- Experience in planning, implementing, scheduling and reviewing works programs, maintaining equipment and infrastructure with a preference for an understanding of fire management priorities.
- Evidence of good oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with internal and external stakeholders and produce reports using word processing, spreadsheets, GPS and GIS applications.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently; show a high level of self‑motivation and willingness and ability to travel, work away from home and camp in remote locations.

Fire Operations Officer, Level 4, DBCA

- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the management of fire related activities for biodiversity conservation, community and asset protection; including bushfire suppression, incident management principles and practices and the planning and implementation of fire mitigation and prescribe burning programs.
- Demonstrated project management experience including leading teams, planning and implementing works programs pertaining to contractor management, roading and fire management priorities, preferably with some understanding of the logistics associated with remote areas.
- Evidence of well‑developed interpersonal and oral communication skills and demonstrated experience in liaising effectively with internal and external stakeholders, contractors, Traditional Owners, conservation employees, and volunteers.
- Proficiency in computer skills for word processing, spreadsheets and data processing including experience with GPS and GIS applications.
