The Software Engineer is a junior-to-mid level role within etrainu's growing Platform & SRE function, reporting to the Engineering Manager – Platform & Site Reliability.
This role is deliberately a blend of two streams of work:
- Onboarding & operational delivery — hands‑on customer and organisation onboarding tasks, integration configuration, data imports, and resolution of incoming operational requests from internal and client‑facing teams.
- Platform engineering — building and maintaining our AWS infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, observability tooling, and the automation that keeps the platform reliable and scalable.
We are explicitly hiring for a profile that will grow into a full Platform Engineer.
You will be coached and mentored by the Engineering Manager – Platform & Site Reliability, with a clear development path in reliability engineering practices, infrastructure‑as‑code, and incident response.
Key Relationships
- Engineering Manager – Platform & Site Reliability (direct manager)
- Engineering Managers and product engineering teams
- Product Managers
- Support and onboarding functions
Key Responsibilities
Platform & Reliability Engineering (growing focus)
- Build and maintain AWS infrastructure using infrastructure‑as‑code (Terraform), under the guidance of the Engineering Manager.
- Improve CI/CD pipelines, deployment safety, and release processes.
- Build and improve monitoring and observability — dashboards, monitors, and alerts (Datadog or equivalent).
- Participate in incident response: assist with triage, contribute to resolution, and complete post‑incident actions.
- Contribute to the implementation of Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and SLIs as the reliability practice matures.
- Help ensure systems remain secure, cost‑effective, and resilient.
Onboarding & Operational Delivery (initial primary focus, reducing over time)
- Execute customer and organisation onboarding tasks — organisation setup and configuration, integration and SSO configuration, training/course configuration mapping, and data imports.
- Triage and resolve incoming operational requests from internal and client‑facing teams, escalating to product engineering teams only where necessary.
- Carry out routine platform work, including minor fixes, technology refresh, and vulnerability remediation.
- Maintain clear, timely communication with customer‑facing teams on the status of operational and onboarding work.
- Contribute to and follow runbooks and playbooks; improve them as you go.
Automation & Continuous Improvement (the bridge between the two streams)
- Identify repetitive manual onboarding and operational tasks and turn them into scripts, tooling, or self‑service capabilities.
- Build and improve internal tooling that reduces engineering effort per customer onboarded.
- Contribute to playbooks that enable customer‑facing teams to self‑serve, reducing engineering impact.
Competencies and Experience
Skills
- Working knowledge of core AWS services (e.g. EC2, ECS, RDS, S3, CloudWatch, IAM) — or strong cloud fundamentals with a demonstrated appetite to build AWS depth quickly.
- Comfort working with databases and SQL/MongoDB — querying, data validation, and supporting data imports.
- Proficiency with Git and GitHub workflows.
- Exposure to Docker/containers and CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitHub Actions).
- Solid attention to detail — many of the onboarding and configuration work depends on getting details right the first time.
- Clear written and verbal communication, particularly when coordinating with non‑technical, customer‑facing teams.
- Ability to prioritise across competing demands and manage multiple concurrent requests.
Experience
- Minimum 1 year of professional experience in software engineering, DevOps, technical support engineering, implementation/integration engineering, or a similar hands‑on technical role.
- Some exposure to production systems and the responsibility that comes with them.
- Experience in a B2B SaaS or customer‑facing product environment is a plus.
Qualifications
- A relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, or a related field is desirable.
- AWS certifications (e.g. Cloud Practitioner, Solutions Architect Associate) or equivalent cloud credentials are a plus.
About You
- You are eager to learn and see the operational and onboarding work as a fast way to build deep product and platform knowledge — not just a queue of tickets.
- You instinctively ask "how do I make sure I never have to do this manually again?"
- You take ownership: you follow work through to completion and communicate proactively along the way.
- You stay calm and methodical when things break, and you ask for help early rather than late.
- You have strong attention to detail and take pride in getting configuration and data work right.
- You are a strong communicator and relationship builder, comfortable working with both engineers and customer‑facing teams.
