Medical Laboratory Scientist - Central Incident Resolution
Applications are invited for an experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist to join the Central Incident Resolution (CIR) Department at our Bowen Hills laboratory.
CIR is a specialised team providing high-level scientific troubleshooting and support to referrers, patients, collectors, laboratory staff, and pathologists. When results don't quite add up, specimens go missing, or identifiers don't align, CIR is where the investigation begins.
This role is ideal for a medical laboratory scientist seeking a change from overnight rotational rosters and a 9-day fortnight option. while still applying advanced scientific and clinical expertise in a challenging, intellectually rewarding environment. You'll work behind the scenes to ensure diagnostic accuracy, patient safety, and high-quality outcomes often solving problems others didn't even know existed.
Key Responsibilities
Investigate and resolve complex issues such as patient misidentifications (including WSIT), recollections, missing specimens, and amended reports.
Apply advanced clinical and scientific knowledge to support staff and pathologists across multiple disciplines.
Coordinate the referral, tracking, and reporting of specimens sent to external laboratories, including liaising with geneticists for complex genetic testing.
Provide transparent and timely advice to internal and external stakeholders.
Contribute to high-quality service delivery through effective communication, accurate documentation, and problem resolution.
Participate in the department's roster, including rotational weekday shifts, after-hours, and occasional public holidays (no overnight graveyard shifts).
What we are looking for
A scientist with solid diagnostic pathology experience who enjoys solving complex, high-level problems.
Someone seeking a dynamic role that combines technical expertise, critical thinking, and stakeholder communication.
A collaborative team member who is equally comfortable working independently within a small, high-performing group.
To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate the following:
An AIMS-accredited university degree in Medical Laboratory Science (or equivalent).
A minimum of three years' experience in a diagnostic pathology laboratory (multi-disciplinary experience preferred).
Excellent communication and organisational skills, with the ability to explain complex issues clearly and professionally.
A strong commitment to customer service, accountability, and quality outcomes.
Proven ability to prioritise workflow, with a focus on clinically significant issues.
Advanced troubleshooting and critical thinking skills, particularly in high-pressure situations.
Flexibility to contribute to after-hours and remote-access on-call support as required.
