This role is responsible for the hands-on management of day-to-day payroll activities. The Payroll Operations Team Leader ensures payroll processing is accurate, timely, and compliant with relevant Awards and legislation. The role also provides subject matter expertise on payroll systems, supports payroll reporting, and assists in resolving complex payroll queries. The Payroll Operations Team Leader plays a mentoring role to Payroll Officers while maintaining close collaboration with the Payroll Compliance Team Leader to deliver a stable, sustainable, and compliant payroll function.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Operations
- Lead the end-to-end payroll process, including onboarding, employee changes, allowances, terminations, and adjustments.
- Perform payroll validations, reconciliations, and pre/post payroll checks.
- Oversee timesheet administration and resolve escalated payroll issues.
- Manage payroll enquiries and ensure service levels are met.
- Ensure compliance with relevant Industrial Awards and legislative requirements.
- Support superannuation, PAYG, payroll tax, third-party payments, and year-end payroll activities.
- Provide coaching, guidance, and support to Payroll Officers.
- Act as the first point of escalation for complex payroll matters.
- Coordinate team workloads to ensure payroll deadlines are achieved.
- Promote best practice,
continuous improvement, and a customer-focused culture.
Systems & Reporting
- Maintain payroll and HR systems, including Payroll Metrics, Humanforce, and IntelliHR.
- Support system testing, upgrades, and process improvements.
- Prepare payroll reports and assist with reporting requirements.
Skills & Experience
- 5-7 years' payroll experience in a high-volume or complex payroll setting.
- Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, awards, and compliance requirements.
- Experience mentoring or leading payroll team members.
- Advanced reconciliation, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Strong Excel and payroll systems experience.
- Excellent attention to detail, organisation, and stakeholder management skills.
- Relevant qualifications in Payroll, Accounting, HR, or a related field are desirable.
