The Opportunity

Our Undergraduate Vacation Studentships run over the Australian summer holiday period. They offer promising undergraduate students the chance to participate in real‑world projects, collaborate with leading CSIRO researchers, and experience our world‑class facilities. Participation provides insight into future study and career directions. Many previous students have gone on to pursue a PhD and build successful research careers within CSIRO, universities, or industry.

CSIRO’s Agriculture & Food unit applies world‑class multidisciplinary science, technology and facilities, relevant IP and global networks across the value chain to create healthier, safer, and more sustainable food and fibre. Our research, from gene to plate, increases productivity and efficiencies at the farm level, improves the quality and yield of Australian crops, develops innovative food processing technologies, creates new value‑added foods, and grows the nation’s livestock, aquaculture and fishery industries.

Agriculture & Food currently have 18 projects available across disciplines including Agriculture & Environmental Sciences, Life Sciences & Biotechnology, Data & Computational Sciences, Social Sciences & Economics, and more. For information and contacts, see the Agriculture & Food Project List.

Location: Canberra, Narrabri (Myall Vale), Brisbane and Perth (refer to the project list for specific details).

Stipend: $2,056.32 per fortnight

Duration: Placements are for 10 weeks between 23 Nov 2026 and 29 Jan 2027

As the Successful Candidate, You Will Need

- To be enrolled in an undergraduate course at an Australian tertiary institution.
- To have completed at least 1 year (full‑time equivalent) of an undergraduate course at the commencement of the studentship.
- A strong academic record (credit average or higher) and/or known capability in the field.
- An interest in pursuing a research career in science or technology, or a related discipline.
- Be available to undertake a learning and development placement for 10 weeks over the summer vacation period.

Eligibility

Applications are open to Australian/New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents and international students who have full work rights for the duration of the placement (no visa sponsorship required). Appointment may be subject to conditions including a national police check and other security/medical/character clearance requirements.
