Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service - Launceston TAS

The SiS program, offered by the Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service, is a specialist Family Violence Prevention Legal Service that provides clients with both legal and non-legal supports as they navigate the legal system.

TALS supports Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in Tasmania and provides legal services, community legal education, and a number of programs assisting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people with legal and justice related needs.

The Role

The Family and Community Coordinator will work directly with clients of SiS to ensure their interactions with our service are client-centered and their needs are met and advocated for. Working with legal and non-legal team members, this role works to ensure our client experience supports the best possible outcome for their matters.

This is a full time, fixed-term position until the 30th June 2030 . Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and allies are encouraged to apply.

What We're Looking For

We're seeking someone who is passionate about supporting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those impacted by family and/or sexual violence.

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

Experience working with people who have experienced family violence and/or sexual violence, with the ability to apply a culturally responsive, trauma-informed and victim-centered approach. We also welcome applicants who have transferable skills and a genuine willingness to develop this capability.

An understanding of, or the ability to develop, culturally safe practices when working with Aboriginal women, families and communities, including an appreciation of family violence within an Aboriginal cultural context.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare accurate reports, case notes,



correspondence and other documentation.

Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships and communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, community members and external stakeholders.

The ability to work in a fast-paced, client-focused environment while maintaining a strengths-based, flexible and non-judgmental approach to supporting people with complex needs.

Well-developed organisational, time management and computer skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet reporting requirements.

Initiative, sound judgement, resilience and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

The ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team while maintaining professionalism, confidentiality and high ethical standards.

A qualification in Social Work, Community Services or a related discipline. Applicants who are currently working towards a relevant qualification are encouraged to apply.

A minimum of two years' experience in a related role, or equivalent transferable experience that demonstrates your ability to succeed in this position.

A current National Police Check (or the ability to obtain one).

A current Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (or the ability to obtain and maintain registration).

A current driver's licence and the willingness to travel as required.
