Aquaculture Attendant - Ornamental Fish (Entry Level)

At Australian Bay Lobster Producers (ABLP), we're passionate about producing healthy, high-quality aquatic animals through innovative and sustainable aquaculture practices. Our ornamental fish division specialises in breeding and raising premium tropical and marine fish for customers across Australia and Overseas, using advanced aquaculture systems and industry-leading husbandry practices.

We're looking for a motivated, reliable and hands-on person to join our Ornamental Fish Team. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys practical work and isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves. Much of the day involves cleaning systems, maintaining equipment and supporting fish husbandry to ensure our fish are raised in a healthy, biosecure environment. If you have an interest in aquatic animals and are keen to learn, this is an excellent opportunity to start a career in one of Australia's most exciting and growing aquaculture businesses.

Some experience in animal husbandry is preferred, with experience caring for fish or other aquatic animals highly regarded. However, if you have a solid work ethic, a willingness to learn and a genuine interest in aquaculture, we will provide the training and support needed to help you succeed in the role.

About the Role

As an Aquaculture Attendant, you'll be responsible for the essential day-to-day tasks that keep our fish healthy and our aquaculture systems operating efficiently. While much of the role involves cleaning, maintenance and routine husbandry, these tasks are critical to the success of our operation and the wellbeing of our fish.

Key Responsibilities

- Maintain aquaculture systems by cleaning tanks, scrubbing pipework and backwashing filtration systems.
- Feed ornamental fish according to strict feeding schedules.
- Conduct routine water quality testing and accurately record results.
- Safely move fish between systems and assist with packing livestock for shipment.
- Maintain clean,

organised and biosecure production areas.
- Observe fish for signs of illness or abnormal behaviour and report concerns promptly.
- Follow workplace health, safety and biosecurity procedures at all times.

What We’re Looking For

We're seeking someone who is dependable, hardworking and willing to learn.

The ideal candidate will have:

- A positive attitude and strong work ethic.
- Good attention to detail and excellent observation skills.
- The ability to perform physically demanding and repetitive work.
- A genuine interest in fish, aquariums, aquaculture or animal care.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.
- A willingness to learn new skills and follow established procedures.
- Reliability, punctuality and pride in producing quality work.

About the Position

- Full-time position (minimum 38 hours per week).
- Four-week rotating roster, including weekends, some public holidays and rostered shifts as required.
- Current driver's licence and reliable transport required.
- Australian residency or unrestricted Australian work rights required.
- Zero tolerance policy regarding drugs and alcohol (medical testing may be required before and during employment).

This is a practical, physically active role in a warm, humid aquaculture facility.

The role involves:

- Standing and walking for extended periods.
- Repetitive cleaning and maintenance tasks.
- Lifting and carrying equipment and supplies (up to 20kgs)
- Working around water and filtration systems.
- Maintaining high standards of cleanliness and biosecurity.

What's In It for You?

- Base remuneration paid above the industry award rate plus superannuation.
- Opportunity to be part of a growing Australian aquaculture business.
- Eligibility to participate in our Employee Share Scheme (ESS) once qualifying criteria are met.
- Supportive team environment focused on learning, innovation and continuous improvement.
- Work in the beautiful Northern Rivers of NSW.
