Transport Workers’ Union of Australia

Murarrie

The Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) is seeking a Legal/Industrial Officer to join our Queensland team. Both experienced and early-career practitioners are encouraged to apply.

About us The TWU is one of Australia’s leading campaigning trade unions, holding some of the biggest companies in the world to account over their treatment of workers, such as Qantas, Amazon and the supermarket giants.

The TWU has cemented its role as a powerful voice for aviation workers, playing an integral role in rebuilding the industry, fighting for a reset of decent jobs above and below the wing, and getting Virgin Australia back in the air after administration. Our members achieved a historic victory against Qantas in the Federal Court, Full Court and High Court over the illegal outsourcing of 1700 workers and is gearing up for a historic fight to reset industry standards and campaign for a Safe and Secure Skies Commission.

We have recently won a groundbreaking legal system to set minimum standards in road transport, including world-first rights for gig economy workers like food delivery riders, rideshare drivers and AmazonFlex parcel couriers. This is an exciting time to join our union as we activate our membership to utilise these new precedent-setting laws and lift standards right across the industries we represent.

Are you interested in holding multinational corporations to account, fighting the legal battles for the workers who carry our country and ensuring safer skies and roads for everyone in Australia? We run comprehensive campaigns to give transport workers a powerful voice in the workplace, in the courts, in Parliament, and in the community.

In this role you will:

- Advise union officials and members on a range of industrial issues;

- Manage your own matters autonomously, progressing a busy case load including unfair dismissals, general protections claims, enterprise bargaining negotiations and related applications, wage underpayments,

rights of entry and disputes arising under industrial instruments;

- Prepare all documentation required to advance matters, including applications, evidence, submissions and correspondence, and advocate on behalf of the TWU and its members in the Fair Work Commission, Queensland Industrial Relations Commission, Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, Federal Court of Australia and Industrial Magistrates Court of Queensland;

- Assist in developing and maintaining industrial instruments including contract determinations and enterprise agreements;

- Represent the TWU at meetings with members, officials, members of Parliament, other unions and employers;

- Contribute to political strategy aimed at promoting the interests of TWU members; and

- Other duties as required from time to time.

We are seeking a candidate with:

- Legal qualifications (strong preference);

- Well-developed research, analytical and problem-solving skills;

- Attention to detail when afforded time to consider complex matters;

- Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills;

- Good organisation and administrative skills, including case management and complying with legislative deadlines;

- The ability to work under pressure, prioritise and multi-task;

- A robust commitment to labour values;

- A sound understanding and working knowledge of the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) and some understanding of the Industrial Relations Act 2016 (Qld); and

- Prior experience working for a trade union, law firm or in an in-house role with exposure to industrial relations or employment law (not essential but will be well regarded).

Final salary will be commensurate with experience and assigned responsibilities. RDOs, 15% superannuation and other benefits apply.

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with a commitment to union values to work in a dynamic and challenging role. If you have any questions surrounding the role, please email ***@twuqld.asn.au or call 0409 473 .
