The Scary Canary is one of Sydney’s best-known backpacker and student bars. We’re the place people come for big nights, good stories, loose plans that turn into late finishes, and a venue team that knows how to make a night feel alive.
We’re looking for a Manager who can bring that energy while still running a tight shift.
This role is not just about opening doors, counting tills and ticking boxes. We need someone who understands the room, knows when the energy needs a push, can talk to anyone, and can lead from the front when the venue is busy.
You’ll be the kind of person guests remember. Someone who can make backpackers feel welcome, get students excited about what’s happening that night, build relationships with promoters, hostel teams, tour operators and regulars, and keep the team moving in the right direction.
You’ll also need to be confident enough to step up when the night calls for it. That might mean getting on the mic, pushing a special, running a game, helping launch an event, or simply knowing how to lift the vibe when the room needs it.
At the same time, this is still a management role. The fun only works when the operation is strong behind it.
The role
You’ll be responsible for running shifts, leading the floor, supporting the team and helping deliver the kind of nights The Scary Canary is known for.
This includes:
- Running busy bar and nightclub shifts from start to finish
- Leading, motivating and supporting the team during service
- Creating a fun, welcoming and high-energy atmosphere for guests
- Building strong relationships with customers, hostel guests, students, promoters, suppliers and key venue partners
- Reading the room and making quick calls to improve energy, service or sales
- Helping drive promotions, events, games and customer engagement during the night
- Jumping on the mic or hosting crowd moments when needed
- Keeping service standards, compliance,
safety and RSA requirements on track
- Managing stock, cash-ups, tills, closing procedures and shift handovers
- Keeping labour, costs and revenue targets front of mind
- Bringing ideas to the table for events, specials and ways to improve the guest experience
About you
- You’ll suit this role if you’re confident, switched on, commercially aware and naturally good with people.
We’re looking for someone who has:
- At least 2 years’ experience in bar, pub, club or high-volume hospitality management
- Robust food and beverage knowledge
- A current RSA
- Experience leading a team in a fast-paced venue
- A solid understanding of stock control, wages, cost control and revenue targets
- The confidence to talk to guests, staff, suppliers and venue partners
- The ability to make people feel welcome without being fake or over the top
- A natural sense for atmosphere, timing and customer experience
- The confidence to host games, promote events or speak on a mic when needed
- A hands‑on approach and the ability to stay calm when the venue is under pressure
- A genuine love for hospitality, nightlife and creating a good night out
Why Scary Canary?
- Be part of one of Sydney’s most recognised backpacker and student nightlife venues
- Work inside the wider TAG network, with access to hostels, bars, travel brands, tours and a built-in guest market
- Step into a role where your personality, energy and ability to work a room actually matter
- Help shape events, promotions, theme nights and guest experiences, not just run standard shifts
- Build real relationships with hostel guests, students, promoters, tour operators and local partners
- Join a venue where no two nights are the same and good ideas can turn into real results quickly
- Grow your hospitality career in a fast-paced venue backed by a broader tourism and hospitality group
- Be part of a team that values fun, commercial thinking, strong service and memorable nights out
Only successful applicants will be contacted.
