Babirra Music Theatre

Canterbury

BABIRRA Music Theatre is one of Melbourne’s longest-running and most respected non-skilled music theatre companies, staging musicals since 1956. We produce two major musicals a year at The Round in Nunawading, with rehearsals at Highfield Road Uniting Church in Canterbury. Recent seasons have included My Fair Lady, Grease and Disney’s Frozen.

We are a not-for-profit incorporated association run entirely by volunteers, and we exist to give community members the chance to be part of high-quality musical theatre — on stage and behind it.

The committee meets monthly in person in Canterbury VIC or virtually.

The role

We’re looking for a Treasurer to join our Committee of Management. You’ll be the custodian of Babirra’s financial health: keeping the books clean, giving the committee the numbers it needs to make good decisions, and making sure each production is costed and tracked properly.

This is a genuine governance role, not just bookkeeping. You’ll sit at the table where decisions about show selection, budgets and investment get made.

What you’ll do

Maintain accurate financial records and process payments, receipts and reimbursements

Prepare monthly financial reports for the Committee of Management

Build and monitor production budgets with the committee and production teams; report on variances

Manage banking, reconciliations and box office income

Prepare annual financial statements and coordinate the year-end external review/audit

Meet reporting obligations to Consumer Affairs Victoria and the ATO

Present the financial report at the Annual General Meeting

Contribute to committee decisions as a full committee member

What we’re looking for

Solid financial literacy — accounting, bookkeeping or commercial finance background (formal qualifications welcome but not essential)

Comfortable with MYOB and Excel

Well organised, reliable, and able to meet reporting deadlines

Clear communicator who can explain financial information to non-finance people An interest in the arts and community theatre (you don’t need to have ever set foot on a stage)

Willingness to be appointed as an office-bearer of an incorporated association.

What you’ll get A meaningful governance role with a 70-year-old company and a real budget behind it

Committee experience that counts on a CV or as a step toward board work A warm, energetic community of people who love what they do An insider’s view of how a major community production comes together

How to apply
