Somerville House is a day and boarding school for girls established in 1899, providing exceptional education for students from Pre-Prep through to Year 12, with a co-educational Pre-Prep offering. Somerville House students have the opportunity to participate in an extensive academic, sporting and cultural program, while receiving high standards in personal care and individual attention within the school community.

Somerville House is a school of the Presbyterian and Methodist Schools Association (PMSA). The PMSA is a mission of the Presbyterian and Uniting Churches.

The Role

We are seeking to appoint a capable and dynamic Director of Choral Music who is a highly qualified, effective and experienced educator, with an intrinsic knowledge of secondary schooling philosophy and practice within a girls’ school environment.

The Co-Curricular Music Program at Somerville House is well known for its exceptional quality and breadth. The choral program, in particular, is renowned for its pedagogical excellence and consistent success in competition events. The Director of Choral Music is responsible for overseeing the Choral program, ensuring the quality of the Choral program is maintained, while being mindful of the needs of students.

This is a permanent, part-time, term-time position, commencing in August 2026.

The Director of Choral Music is required to work 22.8 hours per week between the operational hours of 7.00am - 5.00pm Wednesday, Thursday and Friday during school term-time only, plus 2 weeks (40 weeks per annum).



There may be a requirement to work outside these hours to fulfil the operational requirements of the position and Choral Program.

The successful applicant will:

Conduct ensembles as determined by the Director of Co-Curricular Music and Performing Arts;

Actively promote Choral Music across all year levels within Junior and Senior Schools;

Organise choral music performances within the school program;

Organise and accompany various ensembles for performances/master classes outside the school as required;

Attend all prescribed Music Department concerts, functions and meetings;

Prepare and present Choirs for competitions as appropriate;

Maintain and update the choral music catalogue;

Assist in vocal coaching for the biannual School Musical;

Supervise and manage details for the Senior Years Choral Festival;

Assist the Director of Co-Curricular Music and Performing Arts in organising and rehearsing ensembles for various school functions outside of the normal concert programs.
