The NICU CMO is responsible for all the NICU inpatients as well as all at-risk deliveries, with direct supervision by the on-duty neonatologist in normal working hours and availability of an on-call consultant off-site after-hours. The CMO will participate in the trainee roster as well as the clinical fellow roster as required.
CMOs are responsible for the resuscitation/stabilisation of high risk newborn infants and for assessment, investigation, performing necessary procedure and formulating a management plan of admitted patients within the complex clinical environment of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as well as education, support and supervision of junior trainees.
What you'll be doing
- Responsibility for overall care of babies in the NICU until their discharge from the NICU.
- Initial assessment of babies, and review of subsequent problems. Review of following results: blood gases, lab tests, X-rays & other investigations, including cerebral, cardiac and other ultrasounds. Plan management and therapy accordingly.
- Procedures: Securing vascular access: intra-venous/intra-arterial. Performing arterial punctures, endotracheal intubations, insertion of intercostal catheters, lumbar punctures, needle aspiration of pneumothorax etc.; in particular teaching and supervising junior staff performing procedures.
- Attend morning and evening ward rounds with the nursing staff / Neonatologist on call / Trainee colleague/s, help formulate and execute plans for every baby.
- Attend all high-risk deliveries.
- Attend any unexpected neonatal emergencies in the delivery suite, operating theatres, post natal ward or elsewhere in Nepean Hospital.
- Keep parents informed of the progress of their babies and also keep them abreast of any sudden deterioration in their baby's status.
- Maintain, organise and update at least with each shift the patient notes and transcribe consultant comments from ward rounds. Examination of babies during your shift in Level 3 care and three times a week in Level 2 care.
- Update regularly the Neonatal Database.
- Assist the General Paediatric team with the resuscitation of babies less than 3 months corrected age in Nepean Hospital when required.
Where you'll be working
- Nepean Hospital has an extremely active Perinatal Unit, ensuring a regular supply of high-risk deliveries within the hospital.
- The NICU caters for more than 4,000 annual deliveries at the Nepean Hospital, as well as a number of transfers from other areas.
- The NICU manages more than 1,000 admissions annually, about one third of these requiring Level 3 care.
- Nepean NICU is a 37 bed department with currently 12 ventilated cots, up to 12 High-dependency (flex) cots and a separately located 16 bed Special Care Unit.
- The NICU staff currently includes 6 full time Staff Specialist Neonatologists, 3 CMOs, 1 Clinical Fellow and 9 Trainees.
