Job Title: Road Maintenance Leading Hand

Primary location: VIC – Frankston South.

Overview

The VRMC team is looking for an experienced Road Maintenance Leading Hand to join from the Frankston/Clayton location. The primary responsibility of this role is to support the Civil Maintenance Supervisor with the onsite leadership of the Maintenance Crew, other field staff and subcontractors, ensuring that work activities are undertaken safely, in accordance with environmental controls, and with a high level of quality and productivity.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead the safety culture among the Maintenance Crew and wider team, ensuring all protected working practices (SWMS, etc.) are adhered to on site.
- Promote a safe working environment where the Civil Service Crew can openly raise concerns.
- Ensure that hazards for each work activity are identified, discussed, risk assessed and corrective actions implemented (Take 5).
- Escalate any safety concerns and ensure incidents and hazards are reported promptly.
- Comply with all safety, quality and environmental responsibilities as outlined in the policies and management systems.
- Provide field leadership for civil work activities, assist with site security, material/plant deliveries, storage and housekeeping.
- Ensure plant and equipment are pre‑started correctly, in good working condition, clean, safe and operational.
- Assist in the maintenance of fleet, incident response vehicles and report defects or safety concerns for action.
- Provide input on operational and maintenance procedures and identify improvements.
- Liaise with Emergency Services and local authorities when dealing with incidents or defects.
- Carry out routine and periodic maintenance and defect rectification on civil assets.




- Assist the Maintenance Supervisor with meeting KPIs and contract performance targets.
- Provide traffic management support to incidents and other work activities, being certified in traffic management.
- Assist in after‑hour call‑out/emergency activities and be part of an on‑call roster for incident response.
- Work with the NIOC Operators to provide incident and emergency response service as required by the contract.
- Provide a professional level of customer service to the client and the community in regards to daily maintenance operations and incident response.
- Assist in recording maintenance data in the Asset Management System via field‑based computers (iPad).

About You (Qualifications)

- Proven experience in roads maintenance field and supervision of field resources.
- Competency in plant and equipment used on a civil maintenance contract, including small plant.
- Traffic management qualifications/operator training.
- Heavy vehicle licence.
- Construction induction training (white card) accepted in Victoria.
- Senior First Aid Certificate.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in civil maintenance and traffic management (desirable).
- Knowledge of asset management (desirable).
- Current heavy vehicle driver licence (desirable).
- Traffic controllers’ qualifications (desirable).
