Field Service Role | Sydney-based with frequent international travel
Advent Atum is seeking a senior software engineer to take ownership of our radar, command-and-control, and external sensor integrations.
This is not a conventional web development role, and it is not suitable for someone who relies on AI tools to write code they can't independently understand, test, debug, or defend.
You will be responsible for implementing, hardening, deploying, and supporting integrations between our HORAS software, radar systems, battle-management systems, sensors, effectors, and customer command networks.
A major part of the role involves travelling to customer sites, ranges, integration facilities, and operational environments in Australia and overseas. You must be comfortable working directly with customers, operators, partner engineering teams, incomplete documentation, unfamiliar hardware, and systems that need to function reliably outside the laboratory.
Responsibilities
Design and implement radar, sensor, C2, and battle-management system integrations
Develop and maintain integration services primarily using Rust
Implement secure and resilient distributed communications using Zenoh
Integrate third-party systems over UDP, TCP/IP, serial, CAN, Ethernet, multicast, and vendor-specific protocols
Interpret and implement interface-control documents, message schemas, and communications standards
Work with standards and protocols such as ASTERIX, SAPIENT, Cursor-on-Target, ADS-B, DIS, and NATO or defence messaging formats where applicable
Develop adapters, gateways, data translators, and middleware between otherwise incompatible systems
Diagnose packet-level, timing, synchronisation, networking, and data-integrity issues
Harden systems against packet loss, latency, malformed data, dropped connections, unreliable networks, and unexpected operator behaviour
Conduct factory acceptance testing, field integration, live trials, and customer demonstrations
Deploy software onto Linux-based edge computers and rugged embedded systems
Produce clear interface documentation, test procedures, logs, and technical reports
Support systems at customer locations in Australia, Europe,
the United States, Ukraine, and other international sites
Work closely with software, embedded, electronics, radar, mechanical, and fire-control engineers
At least five years of qualified software engineering experience
Strong production experience with Rust, C++, or another systems programming language
Demonstrated ability to design, implement, test, and debug networked software without relying on generated code
Strong understanding of:
TCP/IP and UDP
Multicast and broadcast networking
Binary protocols and serialisation
Asynchronous and concurrent software
Distributed systems
Linux networking and system administration
Experience reading packet captures and debugging protocols using tools such as Wireshark or tcpdump
Experience implementing systems from incomplete specifications, ICDs, or vendor documentation
Ability to work directly with hardware and distinguish software faults from networking, electrical, timing, or mechanical faults
Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to reason from first principles
Willingness and ability to travel internationally on short notice
Ability to work independently in field environments without constant supervision
Highly regarded
Experience with Zenoh, ROS 2, DDS, MQTT, ZeroMQ, or comparable middleware
Command-and-control, battle-management, air-defence, counter-UAS, or defence systems experience
Experience with ASTERIX, SAPIENT, Cursor-on-Target, ADS-B, DIS, Link 16 gateways, or similar standards
Experience integrating EO/IR sensors, radars, navigation systems, effectors, or remote weapon systems
Experience with embedded Linux, NVIDIA Jetson, ARM platforms, Docker, systemd, and cross-compilation
Experience implementing TLS, certificates, authentication, key management,
and secure communications
Experience operating at test ranges or customer sites
Experience conducting formal integration testing and acceptance activities
Defence, aerospace, robotics, autonomous systems, industrial automation, or telecommunications background
Who will succeed in this role
You are the person other engineers call when two systems are meant to communicate but do not.
You can read an ICD, inspect a packet capture, identify whether the sender or receiver is wrong, implement the fix, test it against real hardware, and explain the result clearly to the customer.
You understand that software which works on a developer's laptop is not necessarily operational software.
You are comfortable being accountable for the result. You do not hide behind frameworks, generated code, vague architecture diagrams.
Who should not apply
This role will not suit:
- Developers whose experience is primarily websites, dashboards, or CRUD applications
- Engineers who cannot work without Copilot, ChatGPT, or generated code
- Candidates who cannot explain the code they submit
- Candidates who avoid hardware, networking, customer sites, or field testing
- Engineers who expect complete requirements before beginning useful work
- People who are unwilling to travel or work occasionally outside normal office hours during deployments and trials
Location and travel
The role is based at Advent Atum’s Sydney facility.
Frequent interstate and international travel is required. Deployments may range from several days to several weeks depending on the customer and integration activity.
Travel may include operationally demanding environments. Appropriate risk controls, insurance, travel support, and deployment planning will be provided.
Application requirements
Applications must include:
A CV outlining relevant systems, networking, radar, C2, robotics, defence, or embedded experience
Examples of integrations or distributed systems you personally implemented
A brief explanation of the most difficult protocol or communications fault you have worked on.
