What you'll do

As the Clinical Midwife Consultant, you will provide expert leadership and support for the implementation of statewide maternity strategies that improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, babies and families. Working closely with the Office of the Chief Midwife Officer, the First Nations Health Officer, the Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Health Organisations, and other key stakeholders, you will champion the First Nations Health Equity agenda, strengthen maternity workforce capability, and support the delivery of culturally safe, evidence-based care. You will manage statewide projects, monitor emerging trends and priorities across maternity services, develop reports and briefing materials, and foster solid partnerships to drive a coordinated whole-of-system approach to improving First Nations maternity health outcomes. Your ability to build effective relationships, engage respectfully with First Nations communities, and apply high-level communication, negotiation and organisational skills will be essential to success in this role.

The successful person

The essential requirements for this role are:
Must be of Aboriginal Australian and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. It is an occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 that applicants are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders.




Must hold a current registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Midwife. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager prior to the commencement of employment.
Must have a Bachelor of Midwifery or relevant postgraduate qualification is a mandatory qualification for this position.
Understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health issues relating to maternity services and ability to communicate sensitively and work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and organisations.
Demonstrated experience collaborating across multidisciplinary services and with key partners to deliver major health reform for First Nations Queenslanders.
Demonstrated experience in working effectively with First Nations communities, programs and or initiatives.
Leadership proficiency through the articulation of team engagement principles and personal attributes that influence a positive team culture.
Contribute to the integration of midwifery/maternity research and experience in co-designing maternity and infant health care with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Applied knowledge of building a First Nations maternity workforce.
