Overview

The Peer Specialist (OPS3) plays a vital role within the Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network Mental Health Service, contributing to the delivery of recovery‑oriented, evidence‑based psychosocial support across community settings. Utilising their own lived experience of mental illness and recovery, the Peer Specialist provides non‑clinical support under the broad supervision of a clinician, assisting consumers to understand recovery, build hope, and work towards achieving their care plan goals.

Responsibilities

- Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Peer Specialist facilitates peer support interactions, promotes engagement, and empowers consumers through education in self‑management and coping strategies.
- Supports collaboration across services, promotes cultural sensitivity, and advocates for the needs of diverse consumer groups, contributing to integrated, person‑centred mental health care across the region.

- Motivation to ensure accuracy, fairness and compliance in rostering and workforce planning to support safe and efficient service delivery.

- Commitment to teamwork and collaboration, working respectfully with clients, staff and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
- Drive to continuously improve, provide quality service delivery and adhere to organisational, legislative and WHS requirements.

Contribution

- Use lived experience to support recovery‑oriented care, sharing appropriate personal experience to assist consumers with understanding mental illness, treatment options, relapse prevention, and self‑management strategies.




- Provide peer support and consumer advocacy, including facilitating communication between consumers and clinicians, representing consumer perspectives in service planning, and supporting engagement in recovery goals.
- Promote collaboration, inclusion and teamwork, contributing to a respectful, culturally safe and strengths‑based environment while supporting orientation and informal guidance for new or less experienced staff.
- Contribute to service quality, improvement and accountability, including maintaining accurate documentation, participating in supervision, team meetings, training, audits, and continuous improvement activities.
- Support safe, culturally responsive and recovery‑focused service delivery, working effectively within multidisciplinary teams, respecting diversity, promoting equity of access, and providing a safe and high‑quality mental health service.
