Technical Services at UTS support teaching, research, and operational excellence across science, engineering, health, and design disciplines. Dedicated technical teams manage laboratories, fieldwork logistics, and specialist facilities, while overseeing procurement, asset management, and compliance with safety protocols. They play a strategic role in enabling high‑quality education and research through infrastructure support, risk management, and collaboration with internal stakeholders.
About the Role
The Scientific Officer provides specialist technical expertise within the Faculty of Science Analytical Services team, enabling safe, reliable and effective use of shared analytical facilities and instrumentation to support teaching and research. The role delivers advanced user training and technical support across aligned analytical chemistry specialisations (mass spectrometry and chromatography; spectroscopy and thermal analysis; and related analytical techniques), strengthening research capability and collaboration across UTS.
Key responsibilities:
- Providing specialist technical support for analytical instrumentation and research facilities, ensuring reliable, high‑quality services for researchers.
- Maintaining, troubleshooting and coordinating servicing of specialised scientific equipment to maximise availability, performance and efficient utilisation.
- Delivering advanced training and guidance to researchers, students and external users on the safe and effective operation of analytical equipment.
- Supporting laboratory practical classes by assisting with specialised instrumentation and ensuring teaching activities run safely and efficiently.
- Promoting a strong safety culture by maintaining compliance with health and safety policies, risk assessments and standard operating procedures.
- Driving continuous improvement by enhancing laboratory services, sharing technical expertise and supporting effective research outcomes.
How you should outline your application:
- Relevant Qualification and Specialised Knowledge: Degree qualification in a relevant scientific discipline, with demonstrated expertise in analytical instrumentation. Experience in mass spectrometry, chromatography, spectroscopy, thermal analysis, or related analytical techniques is highly desirable. Experience supporting other analytical platforms within a multidisciplinary analytical services environment would be advantageous.
- Experience Operating and Troubleshooting Advanced Analytical Instrumentation: Demonstrated experience operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimising specialised analytical instrumentation and associated sample preparation equipment to support high‑quality research outcomes.
- Research and Technical Support Experience: Proven ability to provide specialist technical advice, support and problem‑solving assistance to researchers, academic staff, and students within a research‑intensive laboratory environment.
- Training and Capability Development: Demonstrated experience delivering technical training, laboratory inductions, and user support, with the ability to develop safe, competent, and independent users of specialised scientific instrumentation.
- Health, Safety and Laboratory Compliance: Demonstrated knowledge and practical application of laboratory health and safety requirements, risk management, chemical safety, and secure operating procedures, including experience maintaining compliant laboratory environments and supporting a positive safety culture.
- Communication, Collaboration and Service Delivery:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with researchers, students, technical staff and external stakeholders, manage competing priorities and deliver high‑quality client‑focused services.
Base Salary Range: $109,014 – $120,596 pa (HEW 7)
This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

The position is full‑time and appointment will be made on a continuing basis.
