Please note - the internal title for this role is Talent and People Business Partner
The Talent and People Business Partner is responsible for leading the operational HR function at CMRI and delivering high quality, consistent people services across the employee lifecycle. Working closely with the Head of People, this role is accountable for implementing and embedding people initiatives across the institute. The position acts as a trusted advisor to managers, leads talent acquisition and employee relations, ensures effective workforce management practices, and oversees day to day HR operations. The role manages the People and Talent Advisor and works in close partnership with the Learning and Development Specialist to ensure learning and performance frameworks are effectively embedded. You will:
1. People Leadership and Team Management
- Partner with the Head of People on operational HR matters and help maintain a collaborative, solutions‑focused People culture.
- Support alignment across Talent, HR Operations and Learning & Development to ensure a seamless employee experience.
2. Operational HR Leadership
- Provide expert advice across the employee lifecycle and ensure consistent application of HR policies and frameworks.
- Support key HR processes including remuneration, employment documentation, visa oversight and workers’ compensation.
- Drive continuous improvement in HR systems and processes.
3. Talent Attraction and Recruitment
- Partner with leaders on workforce needs and deliver strategic, values‑aligned recruitment.
- Build talent pipelines through industry and academic networks.
4. Workforce Planning and Analytics
- Monitor workforce trends, contract timelines and staffing risks.
- Use data and insights to inform decision‑making and workforce planning recommendations.
5. Employee Relations and Manager Advisory
- Provide balanced, practical advice on performance, conduct and people matters.
- Support ER processes and coach managers to build capability and confidence.
6. Performance and Talent Enablement
- Support the performance and development framework, ensuring meaningful goal setting and feedback.
- Contribute to talent identification, succession planning and research promotion processes.
7. Learning and Development Integration
- Work with the L&D; Specialist to address capability needs and reinforce learning engagement across teams.
8. Onboarding and Offboarding
- Support consistent, high‑quality onboarding and offboarding experiences.
- Assist with the PhD student lifecycle, documentation and milestone coordination.

What can you bring to this role?
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or comparable experience.
- Demonstrated experience in an operational HR Business Partner, Senior HR Advisor or Talent leadership role.
- Experience leading or mentoring HR team members.
- Strong knowledge of Australian employment legislation and HR compliance requirements.
- Proven experience managing employee relations matters independently.
- Demonstrated experience in end‑to‑end recruitment, including talent mapping, pipeline development, and implementing effective talent acquisition strategies to support workforce planning needs.
- Ability to analyse workforce data and translate insights into practical recommendations.
- Proven ability to build trusted relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and coaching skills.
- High level of judgement, discretion and ability to manage sensitive matters confidentially.
- A proactive, hands‑on approach with a willingness to support all aspects of HR operations — from strategic partnering to administrative tasks, reporting, and system updates — demonstrating that no task is too small when contributing to team and organisational outcomes.
- Experience in a research, academic or health environment is desirable.
