Duty Team Leader — Darwin, NT
We are currently seeking a Duty Team Leader for our store in Darwin.
Our vision
We inspire readers, empower lifelong learners and create memorable reading experiences.
Who are we?
At QBD Books, we believe in the power of stories - to connect, to inspire and to change lives.
As Australia’s largest Australian-owned book retailer, we are on a mission to make bookselling an art again. We are looking for a passionate, curious and customer-loving Duty Team Leader to help support one of our store teams and bring that mission to life.
Whether you are a lifelong reader, an experienced retailer, an emerging leader or someone who simply loves connecting customers with the right story, this is your chance to be part of something meaningful.
Our Awesome Customer Experience program is at the heart of how we trade. It is how we create genuine customer connections, showcase the magic of books and leave every customer feeling welcomed, understood and inspired.
About the role
As Duty Team Leader, you will support the Store Manager in the day-to-day operation of the store, with a strong focus on customer experience, store standards, shift execution and practical team support.
This is a hands-on role where you will deliver excellent customer service, role-model ACE behaviours, support your team during shifts and help keep the store operating smoothly.
At times, you may also perform approved higher duties while the Store Manager is not present. During these shifts, you will help organise the day, provide clear direction to rostered team members, maintain store standards, support customer service and escalate issues where required.
You will be supported by your Store Manager and wider QBD leadership team, with opportunities to keep building your confidence, customer service skills and emerging leadership capability.
This is a full time role, generally worked Sunday to Thursday, with roster details confirmed as part of the recruitment process.
What you will do
In this role,
you will:
- deliver warm, confident and proactive customer service;
- champion QBD’s Awesome Customer Experience program and role-model strong customer connection;
- approach customers, ask helpful questions, make thoughtful recommendations and support add-on sales;
- support the Store Manager by communicating daily priorities, customer experience focus areas and store routines during shifts;
- perform approved higher duties when rostered while the Store Manager is not present;
- help coordinate task allocation, breaks, floor coverage, customer flow, handovers, opening and closing routines, cash handling, security and shift execution during approved higher duties shifts;
- provide real-time coaching and constructive feedback to team members during shifts, particularly around ACE behaviours, customer service, sales confidence and operational routines;
- support a positive, inclusive and accountable team culture where people feel encouraged to learn, grow and do excellent work;
- maintain strong visual merchandising, stock, replenishment, housekeeping and operational standards;
- support education, events, campaigns and local store initiatives where directed and within agreed processes;
- communicate clearly with your team and escalate matters that need Store Manager, Regional Manager, HR or Support Office involvement;
- help create a safe, respectful and customer-ready store environment.
Our perfect candidate
At QBD, we hire for attitude, potential and values fit. We want people who love books, love customers and want to be part of something bigger.
Our Duty Team Leaders are people who:
- put the customer first and understand that great retail is built on human connection;
- enjoy supporting others and helping the team succeed;
- communicate clearly, warmly and confidently;
- are interested in sales, service and store performance;
- stay curious about books, customers, people and better ways of working;
- embrace feedback and know that good coaching helps everyone improve;
- are proactive, organised and calm under pressure;
- enjoy creating a store environment that feels welcoming, inclusive and inspiring;
- can balance customer experience, operations, stock and team support;
- are ready to keep building their confidence and emerging leadership capability.
You do not need to know every book on the shelf. You do need to be curious, customer-focused and excited about helping people find their next great read.
What we offer
This is a fantastic opportunity to join Australia’s largest and fastest-growing Australian-owned bookseller in an important store support and emerging leadership role.
As a QBD Duty Team Leader, you will have access to:
- a competitive remuneration package;
- incentive opportunities, where eligible;
- training and development through QBD learning programs;
- support from your Store Manager, Regional Manager and wider QBD network;
- a generous staff discount on all products;
- the chance to help shape memorable customer experiences every day.
If you have a professional attitude, a love of people, a passion for great customer experiences and an interest in books, we would love to hear from you.
Please apply by submitting your resume and a cover letter outlining your relevant experience and your passion for people, selling and reading.
