An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced and highly motivated Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) – Breast Care to join our specialist cancer nursing team on a 12-month fixed-term basis to provide maternity leave cover.
Working predominantly within the Early Breast Cancer Clinical Nurse Consultant team, the successful applicant will play a key role in delivering expert, patient-centred care and care coordination across the breast cancer continuum.
This position provides advanced clinical leadership, supports multidisciplinary care, and contributes to service development and quality improvement initiatives within a leading cancer service.
Some work with the metastatic breast care and breast plastics team may be required.
About the Role
As a Clinical Nurse Consultant, you will:
Provide advanced clinical assessment, care coordination and support for patients diagnosed with breast cancer.
Act as a key contact and resource for patients, carers and the multidisciplinary team.
Deliver evidence-based education, information and supportive care interventions.
Facilitate timely access to services and optimise patient pathways.
Contribute to quality improvement, service development, research and professional practice activities.
Provide clinical leadership and support to nursing colleagues and the broader multidisciplinary team.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
Current registration with AHPRA
Experience working in a specialist nursing role.
Postgraduate qualifications in Cancer Nursing, Breast Care Nursing, or a related specialty.
Demonstrated expertise in the assessment and management of patients with breast cancer.
Excellent communication, leadership and care coordination skills.
A commitment to patient-centred care, evidence-based practice and continuous quality improvement.
Experience working effectively within a multidisciplinary environment.

Registered Nurse
Minimum 5 years' experience in oncology nursing at a senior level that includes working in a breast cancer setting
An understanding of and experience with developing evidence-based practice
Demonstrated involvement in professional activities and organisations e.g. Australian College of Nursing, Cancer Nursing Society of Australia,
A Masters in Nursing or a relevant field
A recognised course in breast cancer nursing e.g. via Australian College of Nursing
Experience in conducting tumour stream or nursing based quality improvement activities or research
Key Accountabilities
1. Clinical Practice
1.1 Ensure the delivery of high standard of evidence-based nursing care to patients.
1.2 In the clinical setting, conduct comprehensive screening, assessment planning implementation and evaluation.
1.3 Establish and maintain effective communication with other health professional and support staff, patients' families, the community and external care providers.
1.4 Collaborate with other health professionals to ensure the patient's safe and effective transition across the care continuum and facilitate access and referrals to appropriate health resources and services.
1.5Lead and facilitate the development of systems and processes to support the planning and coordination of treatment, education and support needs for patients with cancer, and their families across the disease trajectory
1.6Support the ongoing development of the clinical services model and provide support and information to nurses in the preceptorship program allocated to the clinical service
1.7Actively engages in the preceptorship program, ensuring succession planning for the role
1.8Contribute to the development of local, national and international evidence based care guidelines, policies and procedures and patient resources.
1.9Support and promote excellence and autonomy in clinical practice and patient care




Patients and their families experience timely, relevant and personalised care
The Nurse Consultant contributes to the MDT meetings
Peter Mac Nursing is represented and contributes to the development of evidence based position statement or papers, recommendations and guidelines where appropriate both nationally and internationally
Takes an active role in the planning and conduct of the nursing preceptorship program
2. Screening and Assessment
2.1 Ensure referrals are triaged in a timely fashion
2.2 Ensure patients with complex needs are identified and supported in a timely manner to optimize patient outcomes
Referrals are triaged within 72 hours of receipt
Evidence based assessment tools are completed for new patients and referrals made as required
Demonstrates expertise in clinical assessment skills and care planning for patients with complex physical and psychosocial needs
Supports other nurses to develop expert clinical assessment skills and develop individualised care plans
3. Improving Quality and Safety of our services
3.1Ensure relevant education material for patients and other nurses is evidence based and up to date.
3.2Deliver evidence based nursing care where possible
3.3Participate in and facilitate nursing research
3.4Foster an environment that promotes education and research within the nursing division
3.5Participate in continuing education sessions, committees, special projects and relevant professional groups.
3.6Educates the health care team regarding the concept and role of the Nurse Consultant
3.7Collects and monitors relevant nurse sensitive KPI's for your stream
3.8Demonstrates flexibility and creativity in identifying resources to meet patient care needs
3.9Ensures the vision, purpose and values of the organization are understood and integrated into daily practice
3.10Assists with the submission of proposals for grants/special projects funding
Evidence of involvement in the development and/or recognition and/or evaluation of evidence based patient education resources
Evidence of delivery of high quality education
Evidence of participation in committees and relevant professional groups.
Collection of nurse sensitive KPI data that can be used to inform practice change.
Examples may include the following:
Percentage of new patients screened for supportive care needs at initial consult
Number of phone calls received regarding symptom management
Number of patients who receive a survivorship consult at the end of
treatment
Number of cancellations on day of treatment as patient is not ready for care
Evidence of contributing to/being involved in at least one research/QA project per year.
Evidence of submitting an abstract for conference presentation or manuscript for publication, minimum 1 submission every 2 years.
