This is an opportunity to deliver culturally safe, high-impact legal support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients across regional Victoria, working within a multidisciplinary team at the intersection of family violence, criminal law and systemic justice.
About VALSVictoria Aboriginal Legal Service is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation and Victoria's only specialist legal and support service dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Since ****, VALS has provided culturally safe legal advice, advocacy and representation across criminal, family, civil and human rights law, youth justice and specialist litigation.
Our work is grounded in community, culture and justice.
We provide legal services alongside broader supports including a 24/7 Custody Notification Service, family violence programs, transitional housing, client support and community legal education.
About the roleAs Regional Practice Lawyer, you will deliver specialist family violence legal services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients across regional Victoria.
You will provide advice, representation and advocacy in complex matters, including family violence intervention order proceedings, criminal matters connected to family violence, misidentification and related legal issues.




You will work closely with lawyers, family violence practitioners, Aboriginal Community Engagement workers, social workers and support staff to deliver coordinated, culturally safe and trauma-informed responses.
This role will suit a lawyer who is confident in complex legal practice, committed to culturally safe service delivery and motivated by work that supports safety, justice, family connection and cultural identity.
What you'll be doingIn this role, you will:
Deliver high-quality casework, advice, representation and advocacy in family violence-related legal matters.
Support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients navigating courts, police, child protection and other systems.
Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues to support integrated case planning, risk assessment and coordinated responses.
Build and maintain strong relationships with courts, ACCOs, Victoria Legal Aid, Victoria Police and regional service providers.
Contribute to community legal education and professional legal education on family violence and culturally safe practice.
Participate in practice discussions, supervision, professional development and service improvement.
Undertake regional travel as required.
About youYou will bring:
Admission, or eligibility for admission,



as a legal practitioner in Victoria with an unrestricted practising certificate.
Demonstrated experience in family violence-related legal practice, including intervention order matters and related proceedings.
Strong understanding of the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in family violence contexts, including the impacts of colonisation, intergenerational trauma and systemic disadvantage.
Ability to manage complex and sensitive matters in a culturally safe and trauma-informed way.
Robust advocacy, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
A commitment to improving access to justice and safety outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Confidence using standard office software and client management systems.
