This is not a role for someone who wants to spend their career watching from the sidelines.
Umanity Legal is looking for a sharp, organised and commercially minded Legal Assistant to join our growing team in either
Kalgoorlie or Perth
.
We work at the intersection of law, Aboriginal heritage, native title, mining, governance and regional development.
Our matters are meaningful, fast-moving and often complex.
You may be helping prepare advice for an Aboriginal corporation, coordinating a major negotiation, supporting a mining or heritage matter, organising evidence, managing critical deadlines or helping our lawyers bring order to a difficult dispute.
You will work closely with experienced lawyers, consultants, Traditional Owners, Aboriginal corporations, mining companies and government agencies.
No two days will look the same.
The role
You will provide high-level support across a diverse legal practice, including:
preparing and formatting correspondence, agreements, briefs and legal documents;
managing files, deadlines, calendars and matter records;
coordinating meetings, travel, board papers and client instructions;
liaising professionally with clients, consultants, counsel and external stakeholders;
assisting with court, tribunal, native title and regulatory documentation;
maintaining accurate records, registers and document-control systems;
supporting invoicing, matter administration and reporting;
undertaking basic legal and factual research;
helping lawyers prepare for negotiations, conferences and client meetings; and
identifying what needs to be done before being asked.
This role can grow significantly for the right person.

Depending on your skills and interests, there may be opportunities to become involved in paralegal work, legal research, project coordination, native title matters, Aboriginal corporation governance and commercial negotiations.
About you
You are intelligent, dependable and calm when several things are happening at once.
You will ideally have:
experience as a legal assistant, paralegal, executive assistant or senior administrator;
excellent written English and document-production skills;
strong attention to detail;
confidence dealing with senior clients and sensitive information;
the ability to manage competing priorities without losing control of the details;
sound judgment and discretion;
strong Microsoft Office and digital file-management skills; and
a willingness to take responsibility and solve problems.
Experience in native title, Aboriginal corporations, heritage, mining, commercial law or litigation would be valuable, but it is not essential.
We are more interested in your capability, judgment and attitude than whether your career has followed a conventional path.
Why join Umanity Legal?
Umanity Legal is part of the broader Umanity Group, bringing together legal, heritage, environmental, anthropological and project-delivery expertise.

You will have the prospect to:
work on matters with genuine cultural, commercial and regional importance;
learn directly from experienced lawyers and multidisciplinary specialists;
build practical experience across law, heritage, mining and Aboriginal affairs;
take on real responsibility;
work with a close, ambitious and growing team;
develop a career pathway based on your strengths; and
be part of a firm that is building something different.
We value people who are practical, loyal, curious, respectful and prepared to back themselves.
Location
The position may be based in either:
Kalgoorlie-Boulder
, working from our Goldfields office; or
Perth
, working from our metropolitan office.
Applicants interested in relocating to Kalgoorlie are strongly encouraged to apply.
The Goldfields role offers exceptional exposure to clients, projects and decision-makers that would ordinarily take years to obtain in a traditional city practice.
The role may be offered on a full-time or suitably structured part-time basis for an exceptional applicant.
Competitive remuneration will be offered based on experience and capability.
Apply
Please send us:
your résumé;
a short covering letter explaining why this role interests you; and
an example of a professional document, letter or piece of written work that demonstrates your attention to detail.
Tell us what you can do—not just where you have worked.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.
Applications will be considered as they are received.
