to join a small
high performing
in house legal team

About the role
The Principal Legal Officer works as a senior member of an in-house legal team providing independent, skilled legal advice and legal services to Hospitality and Racing (including Liquor & Gaming NSW) which is a division within the Department.
The Principal Legal Officer will provide legal advice and legal services in one or more of three streams: administrative law, advice as to the interpretation and operation of the liquor and gaming legislation, legislative projects, regulatory advice and the conduct of prosecutions and other litigation and commercial and contract advice to support the operation and delivery of business outcomes for the Department.
Some of the key accountabilities of the role include –
Interpret and distil complex legal issues for the business and prepare documents including advice, submissions and other legal documentation and correspondence to provide guidance on legal implications of decisions and actions.
Work collaboratively and flexibly with clients and other key stakeholders on a range of projects and requests for advice.




Complete tasks and develop solutions to ensure achievement of Departmental and business objectives, compliance with deadlines and governance frameworks so that stakeholder expectations are met.
Manage the provision of external legal advice and the briefing of counsel where appropriate, including managing cost agreements and performance issues.
Identify and report on emerging and significant legal issues that may impact the business or on matters presenting reputational risk to the business with appropriate solutions for resolution of those matters.

About You
To be successful in this role, you will have
–
Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas
:
Statutory
interpretation;
Administrative
law;
Regulatory law; or
Experience in the policy making and legislative process.
Essential Requirements
Admitted or qualified for admission as a Solicitor or Barrister in the Supreme Court of NSW and hold, or be eligible to hold
a
NSW Practising Certificate.
