The Mental Health Commission NSW is seeking interested applicants for the position of Senior Policy Officer, Lived Experience (Carer) to join the System Reform Directorate.
Reporting to the Manager, Mental Health and Wellbeing Reform, this role applies a carer lived/living experience lens to inform and advance the Commission's strategic priorities in mental health and wellbeing reform.
You will engage with carers, networks, and peak bodies to ensure lived experience perspectives are embedded across our work.
The role involves delivering high-quality policy advice, and contributing to system reform that improves outcomes for people with lived experience, their families, and carers.

About You

About the role
The Senior Policy Officer – Lived Experience (Carer) is a key member of the System Reform Directorate, reporting to the Manager, Mental Health and Wellbeing Reform.
The role applies a Carer lived/living experience lens to inform and advance the Commission's strategic priorities in mental health and wellbeing reform.
The incumbent is responsible for engaging with carers who support people with lived and living experience and relevant networks and peak bodies, delivering high-quality policy advice, preparing position papers, correspondence, and briefings for a diverse range of stakeholders, ensuring lived experience perspectives are embedded throughout the Commission's work.
Essential Requirements:
Carer lived experience of mental health issues and recovery, and ability to meaningfully and purposefully use carer lived experience to influence system reform.




Extensive experience using carer lived/living experience to influence change through government or organisational policy and/or relevant tertiary qualifications in a relevant field.
Superior writing and analytical skills, strong attention to detail, experience interpreting complex policy, reports or reviews regarding systemic issues that impact mental health and wellbeing, and the ability to undertake research and analysis to develop effective advice.
Knowledge and appreciation of the role of the NSW Mental Health Commission and the broad range of issues affecting people with lived experience of mental health issues and caring, families and kinship groups.
Effective relationships with peak bodies (e.g. Carers NSW) and other relevant lived experience organisations ensuring connection to a diverse network of lived experience voices.
