Apunipima Cape York Health Council is a community controlled Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health service.
Servicing the communities of Cape York, with the main office is located in Cairns, Apunipima delivers public health care, and social and emotional well-being care, to community members.
Being a part of the team at Apunipima means helping us deliver essential services as well as building capacity in communities to manage their own health care needs.
Under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act ****, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community
This is a fixed term position ending on the 30 June ****.
About the Opportunity
The Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner – Cancer Care is responsible for delivering comprehensive cancer care support services within a primary health care multidisciplinary team, consistent with the Apunipima Way and Model of Care.
This position acts as a role model in the provision of culturally safe, holistic care, which aims to:
Aid in the screening, early detection and effective support of cancer management of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Cape York communities
Guide clients through the healthcare system to access screening and treatment
About You
To be successful in this role you will have:
Certificate IV or Diploma in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice
Current Health Practitioner registration with Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
Current Queensland Drivers Licence
Australian Federal Police Check
A minimum of four (4) years' experience as a Health Worker
Demonstrated experience and competency as a Health Practitioner within a clinical practice environment,



with a sound understanding of integrated client care in a multidisciplinary team
Demonstrated experience working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team to facilitate a quality comprehensive primary health care service
Demonstrated experience performing clinical and health education in a primary health care setting
Demonstrated ability to support the development of health workers and less experience Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners
Ability to apply a high level of skilled judgement, knowledge and skills in the delivery of clinical care
Advanced interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with a wide range of clients with diverse needs
Organisation skills, including the ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines
Understanding of the historical and contemporary issues that impact on Aboriginal /or Torres Strait Islander people and their communities, particularly in Cape York
Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in accordance with community protocols and customs
Demonstrated understanding of the principles of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community control
Must be willing and have the ability to travel in Cape York either by light aircraft or 4WD as required
