General Manager of Heron Island and Wilson Island - Great Barrier Reef

Heron Island is a true coral cay, surrounded by crystal clear waters and acres of brilliant coral. Accommodating up to nearly 280 guests, located right on the Great Barrier Reef with a near-perfect climate, ours is an extraordinary place to live and work in all year round. There is a marine centre, activities centre, boutique, award-winning day spa, spacious lounge and bar overlooking the pool plus the expansive Shearwater Restaurant. Marine activities for guests and staff include world-class diving, snorkelling, kayaking and cruises.
Wilson Island is situated off Heron Island which is some 80kms off the central Queensland coast from Gladstone. The reef experience on Wilson is extraordinary, a unique encounter that few other destinations in the world can offer. Wilson Island is truly an amazing place to visit with 9 Reef Safari Tents accommodating a maximum of 18 adult guests.
We are now looking for a dedicated and EXPERIENCED General Manager to join our operations to assist with the oversight of all aspects of Heron Island Resort and Wilson Island Resort.
To be considered for this role, you must be able to demonstrate:
- Business Management Degree (preferable) with a minimum of 5 years related hospitality management experience in Front Office, Food and Beverage, Housekeeping and Human Resources. Island Experience is essential.
- Proven ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities with guest outcomes as a priority
- Previous exposure to fast paced and ever-evolving remote working setting
- A proven track record of preparing budgets,
monitoring financial information and making decisions regarding necessary corrective action
- Understanding of P&L; statements and the ability to react with impactful strategies
- Proven leadership skills that support the alignment of culture and strategy through employee engagement
- Ability to communicate and negotiate with all key stakeholder groups to ensure the resolution of issues
- Excellent interpersonal skills that are supportive of mentoring and coaching all levels of staff within the organisation.
- Proven ability to work with details and time-sensitive issues
- Good decision-making skills and response to high-pressure situations
General Manager Job Responsibilities:
- Prioritise guest-first initiatives through strong operational leadership, observations and engagement.
- Lead and inspire all operational teams to continuously enhance the guest experience, service standards and operational efficiency.
- Take overall responsibility for the daily operations and commercial performance of the Resort, maximising revenue, controlling costs and minimising business risk.
- Work closely with the Executive Leadership Team to ensure all operational, financial, administrative and compliance functions are effectively managed in accordance with legislative and company requirements.
- Develop, implement and manage the Resort's annual budget and long-term business strategy to achieve revenue, profitability and growth objectives.
- Prepare, present and deliver the Resort's annual operating budget, marketing and sales plan, and capital expenditure program.
- Identify business trends, operational risks and growth opportunities,
implementing continuous improvement initiatives across all departments.
- Ensure full compliance with Resort operating standards, SOPs, company policies, workplace health and safety requirements, environmental obligations and relevant legislation.
- Lead all key property projects including capital works, refurbishment programs and operational improvements.
- Resolve complex guest issues and oversee service recovery strategies to ensure exceptional guest satisfaction.
- Drive the Resort's financial performance by achieving revenue, profitability, guest satisfaction and employee engagement targets.
- Ensure all business decisions are made in the best interests of the guest experience, employees, owners and long-term sustainability of the Resort.
- Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives without compromising guest experience or service quality.
- Analyse daily business performance reports and make timely operational and commercial decisions.
- Maintain a visible leadership presence throughout the Resort, fostering a positive workplace culture and strong employee engagement.
- Build, mentor and develop a high-performing leadership team while promoting accountability and continuous improvement.
- Represent the Resort professionally with owners, corporate stakeholders, government agencies, suppliers and local community partners.
- Perform other duties consistent with the responsibilities of the General Manager role.
